  • Questions.....

I have been reading the forums for a few weeks now since I got my SVO and have a few questions if you SVO gurus have a sec.

1- I have been reading about the overboost buzzer on these cars and I have run into , what I think, is mine. It happens when I am at WOT for more than a few seconds. I have a Autometer boost gauge that is showing between 18-19psi when the buzzer goes off. It will some times come and go real fast like I am just "bouncing off" it. I have been reading that the light is supposted to be a red area on the dash. When mine goes off its the check oil light (yellow) on the bottom left of my dash. Is that right ? Also should it cut in and out (real fast like less than a second between buzzes).

2- When at half throttle in second gear if I build up boost (to around 15psi) the car surges quite violently. If I go WOT it doesnt at all. No boost also is no surge at all. Anyone got any ideas on whats going on here ? It also seems to be making some strange turbo noises (like a strange whistle) from under the hood when its doing its surging.

For Reference I have on my car:
-3' single Exaust w/ High Flow cat (done in 1992)
-Kenny Bell Ram Air (scoop is about to come off before me or my wife whacks it off)
    -Tbird intercooler
    -190LPH Fuel Pump
    -Ric Valve Adjustible boost
    -Flowmaster
-Adjustible Fuel Pressure regulator w/gauge (set at a base of 38-39)

Thats all for now I am sure I will have more questions later as I drive this new toy of mine some more

    1. The buzzer goes off at 17.5 psi. You can disconnect it. It doesn't do anything other than make some noise. The dashes changed through the years - where yours says OIL .. the earlier ones said EGO/OVRBST. If you leave it hooked up .. it'll sooner or later stop working on it's own.

    2. Let me get this straight. If you go WOT .. you don't make any boost? If you half throttle it makes 15 psi and surges/bucks? Whistle or more of a Whoosh? Either way .. check your hoses. The IC hoses and the small vaccum hoses going to the boost valve. Sounds like you have a leak (under pressure). Start with the IC hoses .. removed them, clean them, inspect for small slit or hole or the inner silicone falling apart, and when you re-install, make sure to tighten them pretty good.

Wow I should have waited till I was awake to make that last post. I reread it in the morning and I wasnt clear at all to what I was trying to say. Sorry about that.

      What I ment was:

At half throttle in second gear the car "studders". This is acheived by holding half throttle long enough for the boost to hit 15psi then without making any changes in throttle position the car begins to fluctuate boost up and down (between 7-16psi) causing the car to "studder'.

This is not seen in any gear at WOT. At WOT the car acts and drives normally.

The car is , at full throttle , making great boost and has good vac as well when off boost (vac is around 15-20psi). The problem is , from what I can tell, limited only to holding part throttle , under boost, in second gear.

I would double check your TPS settings. The eec may be getting an incorrect reading and not adding enough fuel for your boost level. There could be a dead spot in your TPS that giving the incorrect voltage at half throttle.

If you have access to an A/F guage, it might help you narrow your search.

Brahahaahah ..... nice Chris - real nice.

But the whistle noise is still there, right? That would be the Turbo. Normal.

The whistle is much lounder at part throttle and sounds sick I am guess that is due to the "studder" effect. I am used to some whistle (running 19psi of boost on my wifes 944 TurboS and the turbo on my Fiat made all kinds of ruckus too) but this sounds welll not normal. I am going to check the TPS and see if thats the problem. Thanks for the help...

Does it sound like a siren? Signs of one going bad.
