I cleaned out the intake of my '86, IC, etc; I have the right pcv valve, and I installed an auxilary separator between the black canister on the valve cover and the fitting on the compressor. That fitting also has the large hole in it. I took the car on a couple of road trips, and checked the auxillary oil separator. It was bone dry, not a hint of oil, but the intake tube and VAM had tons of it. I even checked the metal tube that connects to the compressor fitting with a flash light - no oil residue, nothing. That leads me to believe it's coming from somewhere else, like turbo seal. The turbo was rebuilt recently, but something must be causing the intake seal to leak. Attached is a Garrett troubleshooting guide, but I wonder if anyone has any other ideas. Could the turbo have been somehow put back together wrong when it was rebuilt? Also, I'm not sure how to check all the stuff on this list, or the best order.

Mike,
Yes, if I pull the IC off, there is oil all in the turbo to IC hose. My understanding is that the boost pressure in the compressor housing helps hold the seal tight & keep the oil inside where it belongs. The last couple of hundred miles I really tried to stay off the boost, and it seems like the leak is worse, which makes sense, in a twisted sort of way. Do you think there is anything else I should check before I pull the turbo off? Thanks.David

I have a similar problem.
I have leaky valve seals, and there is oil in the lip of the tube connecting the intercooler to the turbo, and lots of oil in the slinky looking tube connecting the turbo to the VAM. I just put on a Gillis boost valve and clean some of the oil out of the tube. I will wait a few days of driving and check it again.
the funny thing was it did not look like it was on the intake to the compressor wheel, just on the slinky hose. little on the VAM too....

Big Job?
Mike, a little off thread, but are the turbo seals a used servicable item? In other words, could I (in my pretty well equipped shop) do the job?

you forgot that after you take it apart and put it back together that you have to have it re-balanced even if you marked it before taking it apart as the new seal could/is possibly a different thickness throwing off the overall balance of an assembly that has the potential to spin upwards of 100k rpm.88 mustang 2.3T/5speed...svo wannabe :p
