I recently converted my fuel pump on my 84 to a one pump system using a 255 lpph Walbro pump. Now, with less than 500 miles on it, it's starting to make a whining noise. Is there anything that can be done to correct this short of replacing the pump or is it something I'm going to have to live with. It's really annoying.
The original Factory system on the 85.5-86 in-tank setup used a .64 ohm resistor that was switched on to ground at idle and high manifold vacuum conditions. This allowed the pump to spin at a lower speed and therefore run more quietly. That is similar to the resistor wire that most people eliminate when converting their 84's.
Since you may not wish to rewire your pump again, consider whether you may have left out the factory sound deadener between the tank and floorboard when you reinstalled the tank. Over the course of 20 years this stuff tends to compress and wear through until the tank rubs directly against the floor. You'll see the wear marks when you drop the tank again. Sheets of insulation can be gotten at the dealer, auto supply, or the big hardware/home improvement stores.
