  • Engine combination advice needed

Iam looking for experienced people to give me advice of what components to install on my 86 svo. Here is what I already have:
86 SVO, old motorsports big valve head unk cam, 3 inch down tube.
The car is fast but I want it faster amd the power to come in sooner. I am looking to freshen up the engine and change the cam. Should I go with bigger injectors? Chip? Whats a good cam for mostly street driving?
Thanks in advance to all who respond

No offence, but this post should read " Opinions Wanted."

    Sorry inside joke.

In any case, you didnt give a target or goal so i'll just get the train rolloin here....

First, your off to a very good start....and i think the following would be a nice compliment to what you already have:

    1) Ported intakes: Get a hold of GT350R for a set of his gutted upper / ported lower

    2) Ported Ex. manifold or if you wanna spend the $$$ Header ( this will indeed help the spool as well as let her breath a hell of alot better )

    3) Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator: If you use the above....you will need this.

I dont know if i would get into bigger injectors just yet until you start getting into porting the head.

      Gator has pretty much covered it....but I would to add his list;

a larger fuel pump (get a 255lph and be done with it)
front mounted intercooler (aftermarket kit or fabricate your own)
Cams? Most of performance claims people make about their cam are purely "opinion" based - but I would think about a roller type if you don't already have one.
Adjustable CAM SPOCKET (allows you to advance or retard actual timing delivery). Your existing Cam may be a good one - you just need to fine tune it.

Also - you didn't note if you had a Manual Adjustable Boost Valve or are you still using the stock Boost Control Silenoid? If so, get an adjustable one....and turn your boost up.

I would imagine your shortblock doesn't need freshing. The 140ci will last a loooooong time with minimal wear.

        Thanks for input

I do have a bleeder valve instead of the factory boost control, cant really tell much difference though. Would retarding the cam, say 2 deg bring the power on at a low RPM?

Retarding the cam moves the power band UP the RPM range. To move the power band lower you need to advance the cam. Or you could find out what housing you have on the turbo, if it is a .63 housing you can go to a .48 and that will bring the boost in sooner. A .48 housing will not flow as much air as a .63 housing will though.

In my humble opinion you need to find out exactly what cam you are using before you make a lot of wholesale changes or buy parts that you do not need.

Some pieces like the fuel pressure regulator will always be useful. But the camshaft is about the most important piece that decides where the power band is going to fall.

            Cam

The cam is what came in the ford motorsports big valve head around 1990
