What should manifold vacuum be at idle? Mine is about 8". Cam is A-237 set at -2. Thanks.

    vacuum

Mine is around 15" at idle and on closed throttle deceleration as much as 21" . I have a 86 with a stock cam.

Your vacuum at idle can vary, but usually it is in the 15" range +/- 2". But you can throw that guidline out the window when running an A237 cam. I swear that cam has built in voodoo when it comes to vacuum readings at idle.

On my car I now run ~12" with the cam set at 6 deg advanced. When I first installed it with 2 deg retarded, like yours, I pulled about 8" too. I can almost bet your part throttle cruise below 2000 rpm is kind of rough, isn't it? Paul's teal car runs that cam and pulls 16", which completely baffles me. His car also has almost no lump to its idle and runs so much smoother in the lower R's than mine I can't explain it. Just my $0.02.

        Thanks, guys.

Paul's car is definitely magic. I was hoping to take mine over to him before he left for AL so he could do some arm waving over it or something, but I missed him. I first had the cam set at +2, and it really jumped off the line, but I was getting some detonation. When I changed it to -2 the spark knock went away, but it doesn't have the same oomph from a standstill. It does pull like gang busters up high, though - harder and harder all the way to the rev limit. I think it's probably worth it, but I wonder if I should go to straight up or maybe back to +2 and back off the ignition timing. It's at 10-11 deg.
