  • Cooling fan running all the time

Well here goes.......I just bought an 86 that is in great shape but the peson I bought it from did some renovating of the wiring harness. My fan runs as soon as the car is put into accessory. From the electrical diagram the only thing that should make the fan run all the time is a bum fan switch or something with the A/C clutch switch? The whole A/C system was robbed out of the car and the clutch harness is not shorted. Has anyone had a problem with their fan switch that would produce a result like I have. Thanks

Welcome, and congratz on your purchase!

usually, the fan dont run at all when something messes up with the fan circuits...

My bet is someone has hooked it this way on purpose, to keep it from overheating..

the 86 has a fan controler under the dash, (white box with TRW I believe), and a fan sensor on the lower intake (on the bottom)

Just trace it all down, If it looks too horrible, pick up a fan controler kit, and circumvent all the stock stuff. I picked up one from SVPU, pics are posted in the product review section.

Well it was pretty easy to figure that problem out.......the guy basically put a 12 gauge wire from the fan power wire across to the "hot" grey and yellow striped wire that is hooked up to the A/C solid state controller....nice huh???

I'm gonna try and get my hands on a dash harness from somebody......there's too many things wrong with mine.....I got all the shorts out of it but there's other damage to stuff like the fog light connector and other plugs. Thanks for the advice.
