  • Sticky Window

As if I didn't have enough issues, last night my window was stuck in the down position.

So I'm out at 10pm ripping my door panel off my car to check out the issue. I can hear a tick from the motor when I try to put the window up, so I know it isn't a bad switch or wiring.

10-minutes later I have the motor out, and I decide to test it. Sure enough, the motor hums like a champ. Since I thought I was basically screwed for the weekend, out of boredom I just decided to re-install the motor. Well...the window now works.

Prior to this I have had absolutely no problems with this window. Any ideas? My only thought is the window is getting "stuck" somehow when fully lowered.

One of my windows will do this same thing -- if you roll it all the way down, it's like the motor doesn't have enough umph to push the window up. I just figure my motor is about shot, cause that window rolls up slow anyway.

the trick I use (until I replace the motor) is to not roll the window all the way down, I just leave it like one inch up.

Mine does the same thing but, my motors screw threads are stripped. The motor gets on a bind and won't go up. I bought new motors from 50Resto to fix it. No time to put them in.

One of the common problems is the gear box. There are 3 plastic dowel pins inside that crush or just break due to age. Probably a safety thing. They should be common to just about all Fords. A few years ago I went to NAPA and got a new gear assy. for about $45. I see some places selling the whole motor assembly for close to $100. I think is was Hydro_Electric in Mustang Monthly.

I had a window motor pack up on me recently. I didn't do the autopsy yet but it worked fine under no load when plugged back in outside the door.

The motor going in was a Bosch unit, out of a door from GAboySVO. It replaced a Motorcraft unit. The Bosch had substantially more torque. It likes to put a bulge in the door if the switch remains depressed after the window is completely rolled up.

(So Mike, what do I do about a depressed switch? Maybe I should try and tell it a few jokes to cheer it up.)

Au-Ve-Co numbers for the window motors:
          Mustang 1971-1996, #19069, #19070.
          The Gear, 1984 on: #17974 (DOAZ-62234A24)
          Gear Kit: #17257 (C9AZ-62234A24-B and D0AZ-62234A24-B)

They are the same motors as Aerostar, Bronco, Econoline, F-series trucks, Fairmont, Zephyr, Granada, LTD, Marquis, Ranger, Sable, Taurus, Tempo, Topaz, T-bird and Cougar. In other words, not terribly hard to find.

Mine does the same thing once and a while. I just smack the bottom of the door while I'm holding the switch. Works like a charm.

I just saw SVPU sells the gear kit for $19.95. Not sure what it includes but probably the right parts for the repairs. I also saw someone else with the with a bunch of other window parts, Latemodel Resto.

                  Check the tracks!

The driver's side window on my car has always been slow rolling up. A few days ago, it would only go about a quarter of the way up. Upon removing the door panel,, I discovered the felt in the track had gotten kind of bunched up and had somehow forced the front of the window out of the track. A simple fix. I just loosened one bolt in order to get the felt and the window back in the track, and it's working great. It probably took longer to type this than it did to fix it.
