  • 84 Exhaust setup

Greetings from the snowbelt area! I'm looking to redo my exhaust system. However, as boring as it sounds, I will keep it in stock form. I checked with a place today and they said that a less restrictive cat would be O.K. They said it flows with 20-30% less back pressure. Any opinions or experiences? Also, the tube on the side of my current cat is crimped off (not in use). The car is from California. Should it be hooked up to something? Any opinions? One last question. Is there a place that sells the chrome tips? Any help would be appreciated. Dieter.

Do your shopping very carefully. Lots of places list the dual tip exhaust but it seems they not available at many suppliers. I gave up and bought a NOS system for $300.

Do a search and someone has a link posted for a MFG cat.

        84 Exhaust

Well, thanks for the feedback. I failed to mention the fact that the system is not actually stock. In fact I have a 2 1/2 in dp to the cat and comes out at 2 1/4 back to the tips. The cat is not the stock unit but an aftermarket type like you noticed Mike. My mention of staying stock was to say that I want a single pipe to the tips. With my revised info are things possible as I asked before? Thanks for the help I think.

          Miscellaneous info

Mung: short for Miscellaneous Unclassified Nonessential Garbage. Also another nickname for "Gorilla Snot" (3M yellow weatherstrip adhesive).

I retained the basic configuration with the exhaust layout on my 84 but it's 3 inch all the way back, and the bends before and after the cat are two 45* bends rather than the 90*, cat, followed by a >90*bend and then back to the muffler. From the muffler back over the axle was a real project to do in 3 inch but can be done. If you search the archives there may be some photos of the exhaust laying on the ground next to the stock system. It may give you some ideas.

Also, GAboySVO has posted the Walker link several times. They have a 2 1/2 inch "over the axle" tailpipe that should be easily available. It doesn't have the dual outlet tips, though.

I've been threatening myself to make a few duplicate dual outlet tips like the originals but in 2 1/2 stainless rather than the 2 1/4 stockers in chrome. I could have had a new OEM replacement with the dual chrome tips, but the cheesy Walker crimp style bends and the flaking chrome really turned me off big time.

              Pat,

Let me know if you decide to pursue this. I have an nos OEM tailpipe you can use as a model if needed.

Does your tail pipe have the inserts with the little holes all the way around? My was long gone and I forgot it had it. I have a well used tip I save from my old one in case I need to make one someday.

I can get chrome SVO replacement tips for $40 shipped to your door. They don't have the crappy Walker wrinkle bends either.

Are you talking about the circular baffles on the inside of the tips about 3" back in from the ends? If so, yes my tail pipe has them.

It is also attached to a muffler with the Ford Part Number E5ZC E5209-AA. It is a genuine Ford replacement SVO tailpipe, purchased by me in the fall of 1992 from a Ford dealer in Fullerton, CA.

The wrinkle bends in the walker unit are in the over axle bend portion, not in the bends of chrome dual tip. I believe that I've seen that tip on Ebay. As I remember, it is missing the stock exhaust hanger. What we really need is a 3 inch over-axle bend to lead up to that cool dual tip.

                        I see...

Well, I plan to build a 3" tailpipe for my SVO at attach it to that tip (expanded to fit the 3"). Maybe I should send it to my supplier and have them duplicate it on their mandrel bending machine. I just sent them a DP to copy and plan to send them a 3.5" DP for my header in the next few weeks...no reason the tailpipe can't be next.

I would be interested in a dual tip to attach to a 3" tailpipe! Stainless would be very nice!

Well, I'll see what I can get done with it in the next month or so. To make the tip fit 3" I will most likely have to remove the chrome on the inlet...that doesn't seem like a huge deal though as it can't be seen anyway.

They can bend the pipe in SS or aluminized steel so that's not an issue.
