Hey guys, i want to run some big tires on my 85 and so far i have 95 cobra Rs 17x9s with 235/45s and even with the fender lips rolled with an air hammer and grinded down they still rub. I was considering flared fron and rear fenders. I realize this will ruin my SVO but i saw that Lee Clarys evolution looks great. This shop near me makes flared fenders that are flared 1.5" or 3.5". I was interested in the 1.5s as they say they will allow to run up to a 17x11 tire. Or course this means i gotta cut my SVO's Quarters and change my fronts. Just wondering all your opinions. I really think it will look great especially after my paint job.

    Turbizzy,

I just put 245/40/17 Hoosiers on my SVO and the only problem I encountered was the rubbing from the tires on the coilovers I had to ditch the 10" Griggs springs in favor of Eibach 7" springs and set the spring perch all the way up. My car now sits approx. 1/2" lower in the front, but that is a good thing since it was slightly nose up before the tire change ( long story ). The tires are still close to my threaded collar, but I won`t know if they will hit until it gets autocrossed again.

I had trimmmed my fender lips with a sawzall to keep it from hitting them as the paint on my car likes to chip rather than roll with it, if you get my drift, lol.

I have 17 x 8.5" wheels, so your 9" wheels are more the problem rather than the size of your tire. I hate to suggest A spacer, but they might be your best bet..?

      Before chopping...

Aren't there 5-lug axles from other Fords (Ranger, T-Bird, any 5-lug 8.8 as well) that are a narrower track width that will move those wheels and tires inboard a little bit (like 3/4 inch)? That might make it clear the stock fenders by an acceptable amount. You may need to put in a spacer or rework the caliper brackets but it may be worth the work.

        Spacer?

        Where would the spacer go?

Like Pat said, change the rear axles to Fox length axles. You will have to modify the brake caliper mounts. This website has a good how too for the rear http://home.pacbell.net/black306/tech/reardisc.html In the front use fox length control arms. You can get a spacer from griggs for the ball joint.

Which Corba R wheels do you have, the ones with a 5.95" backspacing or the 6.42" ? I'm have the 6.42" with 255/40s in the back and all I had to do is roll the fenders to stop the rubbing.

Not sure on the backspacing of the rims but they car also has been lowered with Eibach Sportlins which i beleive is 1.5" drop in front and 1" rear.

I was wondering about fliping the rear calipers, glad to hear someone already did it succesfully.

My car also has Eibach lowering springs. The larger backspacing moves the wheel in more.

I have seen three other SVOs with the 95 Cobra R wheels and all had the 6.42" backspacing. The 5.95" backspacing or Cobra R clones will not work on SVOs.
