  • Trim color or colors?

    Hi!

The '86 is ready to go back on the road here, but, of course, I decided to refinish the grey trim on the doors, and have been decending into madness ever since...

How hard can it be to paint the trim grey, anyway?

Pretty hard, it seems. The Finishmaster dealer in town can mix up the PPG color listed in the stickies, but it brings to light an issue. It can be mixed 15-20% gloss, and I have no idea what the gloss should be...and more importantly, if there were actually two different grey trim paints used.

I pulled my mirrors, thanks again for the help, and find that the inside is almost flat and has a texture to it, as do the rocker moldings. The rear wing seems to also be almost flat, but the heavy texture sort of gets in the way of actually telling what the gloss level is. The door trim has a sheen to it, when you look at the inside.

Two different paints? I have no idea about the bumpers, having seen my last new one 18 years ago, and memory is the first thing to go. I have seen the bumper trim done in both semi-gloss, and almost flat, but both on refinished cars, so who knows.

I tried the MarHyde 3821, and it is satin and smooth in texture, and slightly dark. Does anyone know how good the SVPU paint is? It sounds like a pain to mix the PPG in a Badger...

    Thanks!

    Dave;
I don't know if you're redoing all the gray trim on your car, but when I had mine painted last Fall I decided that I wanted the gray color used on my trim. The paint that my painter used was SEM Color Coat Graphite, paint# 15303. This is a flexable paint and so far has held up.

This was the color chosen by the guy who painted mine and he has painted at least one other SVO as well.

I know this topic has been discussed before and there may be other recommendations out there.

      Grey trim

      Jason:

What sort of finish is this? Flat, glossy, satin? I have used flexible colors on a BMW with great success in the past, and this might work out well.

        Dave;
This is probably the best pic I have on hand. The bottom of the door area/spat, wing, window moldings, and rear bumper trim were done in this paint. I still have to get the rest of the trim installed. HTH!

          Trim colors

          Jason:

Good looking car...like the wheels. My rockers look a little darker, but the car is a 2R, so it is to be expected.

P.S. The lights you polished sure look better...how did you manage to get your better half to help?

Just a comment about the wings. There were two types of surfaces on the wings. My first 86 - bought with 30k miles on it at the time, had a very textured surface. Every SVO I've owned since - have had a smooth finish. I've only seen a couple of other (all 86s) that had the textured wings. HTH.

The trim should be satin .. not gloss.

              Trim colors

              Bud:

Thanks for the info. My wing is textured, and the paint is original. When you look underneath, it's black and smooth. Also, there is a small paint chip on the side, and it is smooth black plastic underneath. One coat of paint when looking at it with a loupe.

I noticed that my rockers are textured...maybe that's just a byproduct of when it was painted.

Do you have any experience with the SVPU paint?

              Dave

P.S. If anyone is interested...I have a nifty stud repair for the upper wing, and am happy to share.

Not personal use experience, but there should be plenty of people replying to this question - because he's sold quite a bit of it. Or - you could just ask Paul. He's a straight-talker ... no BS.

I bought a replacement lower wing from Ford about 86-87 and it had quite a bit of texture to it. It was much like a splatter paint texture. Of course by 86 the 84-85 wing was obsolete. Texture could be a replacement part feature. Color is slightly different than the trim but since it is seperated from the trim by body color, no one can tell the differance.

My memory is pretty clear on this and I recall when my 85.5 was new the wing definetely was textured. I used Black Chrome to spruce it up from time to time. And I believe all the years of washing, drying, and black chroming smoothed it out (some edges actually shined) to the point where the black chrome stuff didn't work so good. I really wanted to replace it, but that was cost prohibitive at the time. Then around 1994 some jerks actually had the audacity to pry it off while parked at a Park-and-Ride lot while I worked. My $0 deductable insurance paid for a new (86 ) wing assembly (third tail light), and it is most definitely textured. And yes, it's color is yet another, darker shade of charcoal. Now I use Back to Black and I try not to rub so hard.

My 86 has the original wing and spoiler and they are textured but only slightly.

Which year and model Mustang did those wheels come from?

                            Thanks everyone!

Thank you everyone for your replies. Paul called from SVPU today, and I ordered up a couple of cans to test. (Anyone need a full can of MarHyde...I have two!)

It sounds like the 85 and 86 SVO's came with some kind of texture to the wing...probably to hide the true surface finish, waves, dips, etc.

I should be able to post pictures of the car by next weekend with the repainted trim, unless I find something else to mess with.

P.S. I am going to post a wing stud repair process shortly. Thanks for all of the email and interst.

A note on your textured rockers --

the only SVO's I have seen with textured rockers were Canada cars .....
