  • More 3" advice

Hey guys, im finally ready to upgrade my exhaust. Currently i have the stock 85 single setup with a test pipe, gaymaster muffler and a homemade y pipe after the axle splitting into duals.

I have acuired a 3" downpipe from Sac Mustangs and want to weld on flanges to swap in and out my cat for emissions and a Edelbrock RPM series flowthrough muffler with a turndown right after (before the rearend). What do you guys think about this? Will it be too loud, is the muffler a good choice? I don't really mind the exhaust noise but i don't want the ricey or exhaust leak sound. I really like the way you can hear the turbo whine through the exhaust at a stand still rev.

      Side exhaust

What if instead of a turndown, i get a y pipe and have my exhaust comming out near my rear tires like the new Roush mustang style exhaust but what if i put some of those SN95 "SVO" side skirts with that rear hole for my exhaust? You guys think the SVO side skirts wont fit?

I think even if you could find skirts that fit, it wouldn't look right.

          Side skirts?

.....would be too low for my car/ a Nice angle cut chrome side tip in front of the rear tire would be GT350ish~Nice!
Two things: You would have to like the way the muff sounds & exhaust mite be low/ well a least with my southsides it would be.....

Well so far i have fake dual exhaust with a Y pipe after the rear end bend into dual tips, big 3.5" angled cut chrome tips. Anywayz, Kiwi, im glad you think that side exhaust with the angled chrome tip would look cool. Thats what i was thinking almost definately i was going to do. Im glad you guys don't think its too Muscle Car/Redneck looking. Here's my question, should i have it with dual exhaust(one side pipe to each side) or only a single to the passenger side? If you choose the single to pass. side, should i go single tip, or early SVO dual stip style but custom angled cut sort of like a NASTRUCK or a LIGHTNING? Sorry for the long post, im excited about my exhaust!

Oh yeah, about the side exhaust and tips, what do you guys think as far as keeping it a full 3" all the way to the tips? My car has Sportlines springs with 17" rims. Slightly lowered but i think theres enuff room.

Performance wise, you would be better off going with a single 3" complete system all the way back.

If you like the sound of the turbo whistle with the stock exhaust, you are really going to like it with the 3" downpipe.

I like the idea of a dual tip on one side only, going straight out the side (not angled). I wonder if it would get the rear wheel dirty though. That's supposedly why they stopped doing that style exhaust on the regular (non SVT) F-150 after 1997.

                  Borla

On my 86 street car, I've got a 3" down pipe into a Borla muffler then 3" pipe out the drivers side. No cat. Sounds OK, a bit loud but definatly not rice.

My 86 race car still has dual stock mufflers going out the back. Sounds nothing like a race car.

I still think my 84 daily driver sounds the best with high flow or is that low flow??? cat, and a Magnaflow muffler. Really beefy sounding.

Wish there was a way to post sounds on this forum.
Hoping to get on the track soon

first i would like to say this site is great!
i own an 84 svo with the full 3'' exhaust
the 3'' down pipe from sac mustang (nice) a 3'' high flow cat and the 3'' mac drivers side exhaust for a 87-93 mustang with the crome tip a really nice setup and also looks good. it is a little loud but it has its own sound, a real deep hollow sound.

                      Pics?

I want to see pics, anyone got pics, pics anyone ::ranting::??? Seriously, that would be cool if we could post sound. Whyt can't we, on Stangnet they have sound, i bet its the cost thing huh? Still i want to see peoples side exhaust or even better a pic of the underside of the car.

Im now leaning towards the 3inch exhaust with the testpipe/high flow cat flanges and a Edelbrock muffler with passenger side exit. Not sure on the tip yet though, i was considering the dual tip but also like the idea or a angled big fat chrome tip. I definately want the turbowhine sound though.
