  • a few ?'s...

I just purchased an 85 svo, and have a few questions regarding a few parts that need replacing. I am looking to keep the car as close to original as possible. My first question is regarding the Hurst shifter knob. What does a used knob in decent shape generally sell for? I've seen NOS ones on Ebay, but they sell for about $175, which is out of my range for now. My svo currently has a leather shift knob, which feels good, but I'd like to find an original in decent shape (if possible). Also, the outer door window weather strip molding needs to be replaced due to cracking, as well as the actual window liner that seals the window to the actual door frame. Do any of you know where to get these and what to expect to pay for them? My last question is a silly one probably...I've read through the posts on the site, and heard the reference to "fuzzy dash panels" on the SVO's... Should the 85 svo's have the fuzzy treatment, or should they have more of a charcoal grained look? The ones in my svo are more of a grained texture than "fuzzy". There may be a "sticky" on the fuzzy question...I may have missed it. Thanks for all the help.

I'm back. First let me say that I highly recommend you join the SVOCA. There are numerous "members only deals" that you will easily make your membership fee back in the first purchase. You can get your shifter knob recovered to like new for less than the E-Bay price for sure. The window weather striping is available through several Mustang vendors but I would recommend 5.0 Resto as they support us with many SVO specific parts in their catalog. The owner of 5.0 Resto is also a SVO owner. Also the dash panels were "fuzzy" on all SVO's when they first left the factory. Over time they loose the fuzz from the heat / cold / normal wear. They become the grey grained look as you described. There is also a SVOCA members only area on this webpage which contains info that you may find useful. Ken

      thanks

Thanks for the help Ken. I'm definitely going to join the SVOCA. My current shifter knob is out of a Turbo coupe I believe. Its leather...but looks different than the original. I'd like to find a used one...and eventually get it recovered. I've purchased quite a few parts from 5.0 resto, and have had an overall great experience doing business with them, so they'll continue to get my business in the future. I've seen a few posts on the "re-fuzzing" process... I just wanted to get an idea of the correct look and such of the pieces. I'll be sending in my membership form and dues here in the next week or so. Thanks again.

Fortunately there are a few choices for the shift knob as you
have found out. Recover-you will find the price post here someplace. After market Motorsport ($50-60 I think) is very close match but is threaded different. Several people have made it work without rethreading (plastic threads). Finally NOS and $175 is not surprising but a low price might be $100. Factor all this in when shopping for that used one to be recovered.

          hurst knob

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that if you had to fork out a ton for a knob thats in really bad shape you'd be better off looking for a NOS one... I'll keep my eyes peeled for a decent driver grade knob. I'm sure that most of the nice knobs out there are on low mileage cars or nearly non-existent. Most will be pretty worn from 20 years of element exposure and multiple shifts by a lucky owner

I wouldn't give much more than $20 for a good core. The special deal folks may have some spare cores if you can't find one... I have a question for the group after thinking about this : I guess the recovered knobs don't have the Hurst logo embossed into the base like originals?

Mine does. I got it from Bob Tweedy. He has them listed in the "members deals" section.

                    parts

let me point out a couple of things.
the "fuzzy" dash pieces are listed as "suede" dash.
i do sell remanufactured steering wheels, horn pads and shift knobs. the 3 parts are as close to original as they can be.
this includes the "H" on the back of the knob and the "SVO"
on the horn pad. we do have the permission of the HURST corp and the Ford Co to use these trademarkes. the shifter and handle were made by the HURST corp specifically for the SVO and is in truth a metric thread.
                    thanks

I've got Bob's leather parts on my 84 and they are first rate! Bob is great to deal with and his turnaround time is almost nothing. If you are looking for quality recovered wheel, center pad or shift knob, Bob has got what you need!

                        Thanks everyone

I've heard & seen, great things about Bob Tweedy's craftsmanship, so if I run across a knob to get refinished, I'll definitely send it his way. It's great that he offers this service at such a great price. I know that classic steering wheel restorations can run you about $600. My wheel and pad are in great shape right now, so I'm going to hold off on their resto for a while. I'll search the site for the thread on "suede" dash pad restoration. I'm going to focus on the exterior of my svo first, then get the interior in tip top shape. I'm getting my cobra dyno'ed this Saturday (finally), and will hopefully sell it here soon. The used car mkt isn't the best in the world right now unfortunately. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions everyone.
