  • Khumo Ecsta 712s

I finally got some good tires to replace the old hard rocks that I've been slipping and sliding around on for 8 years.
I bought these tires in stock size 225/50 ZR16 and mounted them on stock rims.
I drove around town and on a couple highway trips before giving them their first true test.
I autocrossed them for the first time Sunday. I run a 85 SVO with minor engine mods, lowering springs, Stillen brake pads and subframe connectors.
This car drove like it was on ice with the old tires.
My first run, I drove extremely slow, as I showed up too late to walk the course, and only was able to get one ride-along before my run. Even then though, I kept thinking "Man I couldv'e taken that turn much quicker!"
Second run, knocked 3 seconds off, but took out a couple of cones.
Third run, engine stalled, then fired up and ran like nothing happened... Wierd... Rest of course went fine, but run was junk.
Fourth run, was doing great until I oversteered and missed a gate.
Fifth run, Ran like a bat-outa-hell and knocked a few more seconds off, but hit more cones.

The point of this is that, even though I hit more cones in this one event than in most of the last years worth of events, almost every cone I hit, was on the inside of the turn. I braked and turned too early, expecting to slide, but didn't, and ended up running over the inside cone.
Bottom line is these tires are soooo much better than "regular" low performance tires, you'll have to relearn how to drive your car. I'm sure after a couple of events, I'll be right in the middle of the pack, and possible be able to bring home some awards finally.

I run in SM, and the class is dominated by WRX's here in Indy. They are always 2-3 seconds faster than me on a 1 minute course. I ran down in Columbus Sunday, and ironically there was only one WRX there.

So enough rambling, and I can only say that these tires live up to all the good things I've heard about them. Now I just have to make some adjustment to the nut behind the wheel LOL!
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

I just bought these same tires about three days ago. So far so good, I haven't had a chance to do a full test, but I took a left turn at ludicrous speed on the street to test them a little. I like the feel of the these tires. They seem to like to squeal some, but hopefully this will improve as they get scrubbed in a little.

What national chain carries these (if you happen to know), and what price range are we talking?
        Thanks, in advance,

Discount Tire- not sure if they're nationwide though.

Out the door for $390 for new set of four. Inexpensive, but definitely not cheap.

I needed tires on my last car a few years back and asked for the cheapest tires, I ended up with Kumho's and after driving on them, I was sold. I have no idea why they are so inexpensive, but they have to be one of the best brands on the market.

My opinion for what it's worth.

Because they are made in another country and people there probably make $10 a day. But I bought a set and they are dfinately a good tire.

                  712 in a Z rating?

Just to clarify these are z rated 712's?
I work at a indepedant tire dealer (goodyear) but we sell lots of kumhos and have never seen or had any ordering info for 712's z rating.

                  225/50R16 92H KUMHO 711 BK ECSTA 92H (130 mph)

                  225/50R16 92V KUMHO 712 BK ECSTA 92V (150 mph)
                  225/50R16 92W KUMHO 712 BK ECSTA 92W (169 mph)

the only z rated kumho I have been able to find is the
                  225/50R16 92Z KUMHO V700 RACE ON 92Z (150+ mph)

Just curious to see if we are missing out on < expensive z rated tires.

PS> We have had very few complaints and/or warranty issues with the kumhos we have sold, though we mostly sell truck tires over here in the mountains.

I had 712's (255/40/17) on my LX, decent for the price. I have 711's (245/45/16) on the SVO. Strangley though, that size is Z rated and most of the other 711's are H rated. Cannot beat the price also, $55 ea from Tire Rack.

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.
                      W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
                      Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.
                      225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h
                      205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h
                      285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h

Most recently, when the Y-speed rating indicated in a service description is enclosed in parentheses, such as 285/35ZR19 (99Y), the top speed of the tire has been tested in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h indicated by the service description as shown below:
                      285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
                      285/35ZR19 (99Y) in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h

As vehicles have increased their top speeds into Autobahn-only ranges, the tire speed ratings have evolved to better identify the tires capability, allowing drivers to match the speed of their tires with the top speed of their vehicle.

(No, I'm not that anal retentive. I just cut and pasted this from Tire Rack. If I were younger this would be called plagarism. When you get older, it's called "research"!)

I have a set of 275/35 ZR/18 712's on my Cobra R. they have about 4k miles and 5 open track days on them. So far I have been pleased with them. They corner OK and provide predictable feedback as you begin to approach maximum grip. They are down to the second wear marker in some places.

Straight line traction with them is not the greastest.

They have been a good tire for me to learn on, but when they are gone, I'll probably go to a more dry/max traction compund tire. Perhaps the Kuhmo MX?

My SVO has some Firestones on it, that are OK. I haven't had a chance to drive it hard yet.
