  • Removing door ID tag?

    Hi All:

well, I replaced the door to my "mission dollar SVO" (we can build it stronger..."

and the old door still has the vin attached to it- is there a way to remove the sticker that has this information on it? I just need to transfer it to the new door.

    thanks all!

    Phil,

As you can guess, I just did this. I used a razor blade to get under the corner and it peeled up, quite easily, w/o distorting or damaging any of the info. It came off in one whole piece. I have stuck to a piece of wax paper till I'm ready to stick it back the new on the new door.

To put it back on I plan on using a spray adhesive, prefferable 3M vairety, available at Depot possibly or Michaels/Arts crafts store.

I might even have some left over from when Jay re-did his headliner.

edit: after I used the razor to lift a corner, I peeled it slow by hand....

Boy you are lucky! Be VERY careful when removing the sticker! They are designed to pull a diagonal repeated message of the word "VOID" throughout the entire background of the sticker. When you try to reapply each of the words void go clear and the color / paint underneath shows through each word void. My recommendation would be to take a cut-off wheel and cut the body of the door at least 3 inches around the outside edge of the sticker and transfer it to the new door. This of course requires welding it in and blending the paint and is probably me just being a little "tight" ( there is another word for this Ha Ha ) about details.

Hmmm. Thats odd. I have mine right here In front of me & it came off a black door jamb and is now sitting on a white background. No signs of this "void" phenomena you mention.

Maybe I got lucky? I've never heard of such a thing before?

          door tag

You could buy replacements a while back. I haven't looked for a few years. Try the first generation data plate sources. There should be 2-3 places that will print one up for you.

            A little more detail...

I actually never tried to peel mine off. My 2R was hit in the drivers door many years ago which required replacement of the door. When I was at the body shop the guy showed me on another door how the void appears. The plan was to save the original trashed door and do the cut and weld as I described. When I went to pick the car up to have it appraised for my upcoming lawsuit I found where they had blown the clearcoat off one of my wheels. We got into a urinating contest which ended in them buying me a new wheel. When I went up to pick up the wheel I forgot to get the original door. When I remembered a couple of days later I went up there and the door had magically disappeared. I spoke with a guy in the shop and he said the "boss" had told him to throw it away and that the scrap guy had just left. Luckily I had made a hand drawn copy previous to the accident which I still have... another one of my "tight" things that paid off after the fact! I have local guy's business card at the house who is supposed to be repoing stickers. Another one of those things to do...

              While you were replying...

I'll find my hand drawn one ( 85.5 ) and scan and send to Eric if that will work? I'll get the local guys name also. He owns a MCA certified gold concours resto shop south of Atlanta. Does Shelby's etc.

Another thing that works well is to cut around the old tag with a cutoff wheel, then scan the tag and get some clear 3M film and then adhere the tag and film to the door. We did this in the body shop i worked at if we replaced a door shell on a vehicle that way it still has all the info there. Just another idea
