  • Door Hing Pin Removal

OK, looking for some advice on the easiest way to remove the door hing pins on the driver's door on my 86. A few years ago I replaced both sides on my "88SVO", but I had both doors off and I used a reciprocating saw. With this method I found that it's tricky to do without actually chewing into the door frame. I wasn't particular worried about the door frames because I repainted all of them anyway.

I don't have a cut-off wheel or a torch. And I don't want to remove the hinge from the body. So what advise can you guys give me on this one? I tried the search feature, but didn't find anything.

It's supposed to rain all weekend in Mass, so this will be a prefect rainy day project.

    Thanks - Joe

It's been a long time since I have done one, but I seem to remember using a drill, and drilling out the pin from the top and bottom, then taking a punch and driving it the rest of the way through

But like I said -- it's been a LONG time.

Like Eric said, you can use a drill to remove most of the flared revit part. Be careful that you are centered so as not to damage the hole in hinge bracket. I believe you will need a chisel or dremel tool to get the rest of it.

I think you will be better off taking the door off the car. The bottom pin is going to damage your paint job just knocking it out if you don't cut it.

When you buy replacements, get the one that have the knurled shaft near the pin head. I have found that this style works best and makes the pin and the bushing the consumeable parts and not your hinges.

Get the reproduction replacement parts (black) as the Ford ones (brite plated finish) are not hardened. See a recent write up in MM.

hey Kevin -- I haven't read the one in MMFF -- but if the pins are hardened, and you have a metal on metal hinge -- Don't you take the chance of wearing out the door hinge, instead of the bushing ?

Well the "acu-liars" were wrong again, today turned out pretty nice, so I ended up working on the honey-do list instead of the SVO.

I've already purchased a set of pins/bushings from 5.0Resto (had 'em for months). I'll try the drill route first and if all fails, I'll break out the milwaukee recip saw. Thanks for the advice.

Hey Eric, I had to check because sometimes I'm pretty far behind on reading MM. It was June 04, page 56. It detailed 69-70 hindges but commented on all. There was no mention of bushings on the 3rd gen cars like the earlier cars had. I would imagine they would have the bushings too. I guess there could be a concern about wearing out the hindge.
