Yeah, but it upsets the front/rear weight distribution!

my history 999 report says that it came with one and it also makes complete sense because the car was originally sold in Ohio...... so id like to have one eventually......... I hear if i put cobra rims, eibach springs, a bigger turbo, roller cam, bypass the waste gate, paint it something other that the 2r red, take out all seats and carpet.... it would make the front license plate look real good... or those mods would make it go a bit faster that keeping the front plate off of the car.... so i've heard anyway.......

The svo used a galvanized metal bracket covered by a silver plastic frame. I'm sure the plastic frame was used on other cars but who knows. The regular production mustang used a one piece plastic bracket by 86 I think.

There is a plastic bracket on ebay right now. It would be nice to find a replacement that bolts from the botton side so the holes wouldn't be right out in front.

The 1984 SVO used a galvanized metal front license plate bracket. It is identical to the galvanized metal front license plate bracket used on all Ford Mustangs from 1979 thru 1984. Take a tour of your local pick your part junkyard and you should easily find several examples that are correct for a 1984 SVO.

The 1985 and 1986 SVO's used a plastic front license plate bracket, same as the regular 1985-86 Mustangs. These may also be found at your local junkyard, on eBay or can be purchased new from suppliers such as 5.0 Resto. The 5.0 resto part number is LRS-17385A. The Ford part number isE5ZZ-17A385-A. I last ordered one about 9 months ago.

              Front Plate

Thanks to all who helped with info. Once again I appreciate this forum and the SVOCA !!!!. Just yesterday I walked into the Garage and looked over at my 86 2r and said to myself.. She's Mine...I admire its rarity, and its uniqueness among many Specialty mustangs..one fact that is most interesting to me is that there were More Shelby's built than SVO's.... hmmmm ....my brother has a 68 gt350 4spd convert.. so i jib him on a regular basis about how my model is more rare... he just smiles....

So what did the plate holder that came out of that box look like? Was it plastic or metal.

Based on the 1982 part number on the box, it should have been metal That would be correct for an 84.

The plastic one with an 85 part number is correct for the 85 and later cars.

                    License Plate

Here is a picture of the plate holder. It is plastic. It attaches to the front plate bracket. I thought all SVO's came with this plate holder (whether they needed it or not) and it was installed by the dealer if required by the state in which the car was sold.

                      Front plate bracket

Here is the front bracket mounted to my car. There are inserts in the bumper cover that the bracket screws to.

                        Front plate box

On the box that the plate holer came in, there is a date of "Nov. 85" stamped on the box along with a "Rec'd".

In Maryland it's the law that we have plates up front. When I picked mine up in Aug 85 it had no plate frame on the front and none in any box inside the car.
                          I got gypped!
So I never put a plate up front. Gotten only one ticket in 19 years. And I tried to weasle out that one saying that the bracket is no longer made ...so I can't put one on if I wanted to. That didn't work like I thought it would.
Now I wonder if I ever happened to be driving through Kennesaw Ga., would Bud write me up?
And that stupid hurricane (or whats left of it) should be up in my neck of the woods tonight.

When I moved back to Texas, I had to put a front plate on my car. I ordered the front plate bracket from Late Model Restoration Supply (same as a 87-93 front bracket) and put my front plate on.

I never understood the who-ha over not wanting a front plate. Having grown up in Texas (where front plate have always been a requierment), cars look funny to me with out a front plate.

Georgia doesn't require a front plate. I wonder what the number of states is that "hafta" versus "don't hafta" have a front plate? I'm also one of those who caught the guy as he was just about to drill the cover to install it and stopped him just in time. He then tried to put the plastic sticker on the hatch next to the SVO emblem but stopped him there as well. I settled on a rear license plate frame and still have it on the car. I just think it looks cleaner with the plate. It's easier to wash and wax for sure. I also still have the cardboard temporary / drive out plate for shows.
