I currently have a cat pipe that came of an 86 on my 84. But it has nothing to hang from. Looks like there supposed to hang from something on the tranny crossmember (I believe it's a stock 84 piece). Are the hangers/xmembers the same 84-86? what about other mustangs/fords?
The bracket with two rubber insulators is mounted between the rear trans mount and the trans. Originally two steel rods, which are welded to the down pipe, slip into the rubber. The bracket is the same but the down pipes are phased differently. The pipes end up in different outlet locations due to the difference in the 84-85 single exhaust vs. the 85.5-86 dual exhaust. I don't think you need a wrecking yard. You just need two lengths of 7/16" steel rod and a welder. When you're in Sherman Oaks swing by and we'll fix you right up.
I have the rods welded onto the pipe. What I don't have are the isolaters and brackets that the rods go into. The rods come up from the pipe right now and sit in limbo in the empty space between the x-member and the body, one on either side of the tranny.
I'm gonna try to hit the JY this weekend for a couple things, but I'm not sure what other cars might have parts I can use...
I'll be in So Cal in a couple weeks, but probably at the Pt. Mugu Airshow all weekend. Not sure about after that, probably 1 or 2 weeks later.
I have four of them, NOS in my SVO accumulation pile if you need one. PM me if you want. It is a Mustang part number (E3ZZ) per Ford. Believe they're the same for 84-86 as the part number would lead you to believe. On a side note, do you really need this hanger? I see a lot of guys are running the 3" DP without them. The exhaust seems pretty sturdy without them. On my car, should I put it back on? I guess anyone handy with a welder can rig this up without much trouble since it just welds to the DP/cat assy.
Seems like alot of weight to be hanging off the turbo, which is only hanging of the exhaust manifold, especially with the type of driving I'm planning to do with it. Granted my E6 is less prone to cracking than an E3, but I'd rather not test it.
Besides, I can hear the pipe and/or rods rattling against the x-member as I go over bumps and stuff. So I know it's moving quite a bit b/c when it's parked the rods and pipe are each about 2-3 inches away from the x-member. All that adds up to more stress on the turbo/manifold.
I'm gonna try the JY this weekend, but if can't find anything that works I'll let you know and take a couple of hangers off your hands.
Javier and Eric, I concur with the weight assessment. Even thought my 86 has an E6, I'd rather not chance it. The whole deal seems pretty sturdy under there, but why introduce forces where they don't belong. The bracket stays!
