  • Head lamp bulbs needed for 86

Went out Friday night, heading out to a 2.3 meet in Ft. Worth, Tx, fired the car up, turned on the headlights, and the drivers side immediatedly went out. Needless to say, no 2.3 meet, I went to Pep Boys, Autozone, etc...no one has the bulb that I need, the pep boy headlamp book says it a 6054...Anyone else have trouble finding bulbs...or does anyone know where I can get some.

      85.5-86 Headlight bulb

The bulb is a 9004. You should be able to find this just about anywhere. They are a common bulb (unlike the H2 50Watt bulb used in the fog lights). They are even available in long-life, extra bright, and cool-blue versions!

I found that when I went to several auto stores they looked up the info and it came up with the whole glass casing for the car. I told them the computer is wrong and it's only a bulb. They looked at me like I was stupid. So now I do like Eric......Walmart. I've got the cool blues on my 86 for 18.00 a pair.

I'm afraid to say that Autozone is the only chain parts store that I EVER have any luck with getting little stuff like this for the SVO --

BUT - when you go to Autozone -- when the parts guy asks you "what car you have", and you say 1986 MUSTANG SVO -- Lean your head over, and watch the screen, Make sure they pick Mustang SVO, not just Mustang --

if the next question out of their mouth is what size engine, they picked the wrong menu, tell them to back up, and select mustang SVO.

We just got a o'rileys in town, I haven't had time to scope them out to see if they have a SVO listing yet or not.

My Autozone or Kragen's already know to punch in SVO when they see me walk in. When I need an 85.5 part, I ask for an 86 SVO to save the grief.

But here's what really threw them yesterday. I asked the counter person for three 1/4" coarse thread nuts. She had to confer with two other counter people before finally calling the manager!

Gee, three 1/4-20 nuts! Doesn't take much to confuse them does it?

I try VERY hard NOT to confuse my local Autozone people. The problem is that the car I'm working on is often older than they are!

Yep, 9004 is the part #. Fits most composite headlights up to '93 them most single bulb lights started to use 9007. All the catalogs list H6054 for 84-86 SVO.

BTW, I went to AZ the other day to get a couple of driving light bulbs (H2) and it looks like they do not carry them anymore. They used to be $7 ea. I asked the manager if he could order them and he was a complete tool. I have been in the parts industry for 17 years and I hate dealing with them.

Yeah, i agree... most of the time when you look up headlight bulb for any year mustang SVO they only have listings for the sealed beam "H6054" bulb for early SVOs. Its as if tho no one has info for the composite bulbs only.

So the 9004 is what we run right? Whats the difference between the 9004 and 9007? Im guessing the 9007 is a single filament normally a hi beam right? My buddy was going to sell my some Silverstar 9007 bulbs, was wondering if they'd work. I guess not then...

You need 9004. The 9007 is used in most single light composite headlights starting in 1994. 9005 and 9006 are used in dual light composite headlight, high beam and low beam. The 9007 looks like the 9004 but there is a tab that keeps them from interchanging. They probably have a different focal point.

Also on the 9004 and 9007 the "middle" pin is spaced differently with the other 2... I looked at these from my step-dads 97 'Bird(RIP) as they had more light output for my old 92....

I did the same thing, and the guy actually rolled the monitor a little my way so we could both look......he got it right the first time with no prompting from me. I have had good service from them.
On another note........Ok folks, when you say 9004, who is the mfr? Sylvania or what? At my Pep Boys, all the bulbs are on pegboard with the books right there to look it up yourself. No counter-weiner to ruin my day. I haven't scoped for the headlight bulb, but I did replace all of the rear bulbs at once for my initial state inspection. They carried all I needed.

9004 is the industry number. All manufacturers use the same numbers on all bulbs.

If you want to really read up on type/mfg/etc on light bulbs, check out this website:

                              Daniel Stern Lighting

I have read his info and talked with him at length via e-mail and can say he does know his stuff. Good luck.
