  • Radio install in 84

I don't know enough about SVOs to know what exactly came on the SVO from the factory (speaking of the interior), so this is what I have surmissed:

The 1984 SVO had the radio with the knob on each side. I didn't have the opening for the single din. The 1985 and up Mustangs have the single din radio in them. I have come to this conclussion because I have my original radio with knobs on each side and I have seen pictures of later SVOs with single din, original radios.

If this is correct, someone has butchered the radio area to fit a single din. I plan on putting a single din CD Player in it and I can't get a mounting kit for it, so I was wondering how you guys were putting single din radio recievers in the 84 model SVOs.

Also, from what I can remember my 86 Mustang had 3 1/2" speakers in the dash. Is that correct and the same on the 84 models?

    Thanks for any help.

Speaker size is 3 1/2" in the dash and 5x7 (6x8 will prob fit as well) in the rear hatch.

As far as the radio goes, there is no "direct" mounting kit for a single DIN in place of the '84 opening. I ended up going to a good car audio shop and found a metal face plate (with Single DIN opening) that would fit the recessed area of my '84. I did have to sand it down a bit around the corners to get it to fit correctly, but time & patience will work here. Once the face plate is the correct dimensions, mount your radio using the supplied cage for it. You should have a screw in the back of your radio that will allow you to attach metal a metal backstrap in order to secure the rear of the radio. HTH.
