They're not the same.
Look over this chart - you'll see differences in the input shaft length/diameter....as well as gearing.

I dunno if I would personally buy a "new" tranny...You can find a decent used tranny pretty much anywhere for about 100-300 bucks.
Even if it needs rebuilt, your at another couple hundred and your still over $500 less than a "new" one.
Check out the big Ford swap-meet in Columbus next weekend.

USING THE TRANNY CHART POSTED IN THIS THREAD. I FOUND AND INSTALLED A 1352-155 TRANS FROM AN 87TURBO COUPE (WHILE I REBUILD MY STOCK) AND IT WORKS SO WELL I'M ALMOST GIDDY.
IT APPEARS TO BE GEARED JUST DIFFERENT ENOUGH CAUSE THE COUPES 3.55 THAT MY 86 W/3.73 IS MUCH HAPPIER DOWN LOW.
THANX FOR THE AWESOME CHART AND THE EFFORT YOU PUT INTO IT

Just something I thought I'd add to this while I'm playing with my transmission..
If your T5 don't have a ID tag on it, you can take it apart, count the teeth, and if it matches up with below, you have a SVO T5
Tooth Count on 85-86 ---
tooth count on the counter shaft for SVO T5's are --
35-31-23-15R-15 -- (thats ordered, Input gear, 3rd, 2nd, Reverse, 1st)
The driven gears (on the main shaft) have a tooth count of-
1st - 33 teeth
2nd - 31 teeth
3rd - 27 teeth
input - 22 teeth
4th isn't really a 'gear', as it just locks the input shaft to the main shaft, which is straight through 1:1.
Over-drive gears are
51 teeth on the drive gear (counter shaft)
25 on the driven gear (main shaft)
If you want to be really smart, and show the ratios --
divide driven/drive * input-shaft ratio (driven/drive)
So for first gear, as a example,
(33/15) * (35/22) = 3.5
This should help you identify any T5....
The 84 T5 may be different, I don't have one to take apart and count

All SVO's came with 5-speeds.
So, I'm guessing you probably don't have a SVO.
You might check corral, or some of the more general mustang sites for help on that swap. Thats not really the kind of stuff we are here for.Eric C

t-5
look thru the archives. i think there is a chart that gives the tag #s, what years they were used and the gear ratios. for toughness i would suggest the 87-88 turbo bird. for a really deep gear set i would use the 84-86 turbo bird.
also if you are using anything other than an 87-88 turbo bird be sure and invest in a cast iron throw out bearing collar. these will not fit the 87-88turbo bird t-5.
