  • reinstall dead pedal

I'm trying to install a dead pedal. Can I get to the back of where the dead pedal installs w/o having to remove a door and/or fender? How???

The original screws/bolts that hold the pedal seem to have been ripped out of the sheet metal b/c the holes are torn up. (It was like that when I bought it!) I wanted to put in nuts/bolts, but I can't figure out how to get to the backside of that metal. I can't even find large enough sheetmetal/self-tapping screws to fit in the enlarged hole. I pulled out the plastic kickpanel and pulled some of the wires out of the way, but still can't get to the backside.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated too.

How 'bout ball peening the original holes flat and moving it just a tad and making new holes for it? If you want to use the same holes, Lowe's has a good assortment of sizes on those. One size up should do it I think.

Strange note, my '88LX, pre-drilled from the factory for every foxbody combo came with the holes for the dead pedal ready to add the self tapping screws. That suprised me.

I would think that bending that already thin sheet metal back and forth will just weaken it so that it will be more willing to let go than it did the first time. I tried looking for the largest self-tapping or sheetmetal screw I could find. But the largest one I could find was the one that had been ripped out of the hole already!

You could peen the metal flat again the get a piece of sheet metal, maybe 1 inch x 1/2 inch and rivet it over the hole. Then redrill the new hole in the new metal.

          Anybody ever heard of...

TSM (Thin Sheet Metal) Nutserts? They work great on stripped out Bi-Wing hatch holes as well.

I thought about those, but wasn't sure if they were strong enough. They need to withstand me standing on that pedal going around corners (hopefully!) at high speed.

I'm gonna try pulling the dirt shield tonight. How is that held on? bolts? rivets? gum?
