  • Best way to paint the window moldings

What is the best process to use to paint the window trim? I have removed the window trim on my 85.5 2R and plan on painting them this winter. I plan on using paint remover first, then maybe a primer before paint.......any suggestion for this process? Has anyone redone their trim? Happy Holidays to all!

Does it still have the factory paint on it? If so leave it on there. It will make the best primer. Just scuff it up with a Scotch Brite pad and repaint.

most of the paint is still intact, however some of the paint in a few areas has chipped off. The grey has really faded over the years.

Leave original paint on. Sand gentle with some fine coarse wet/dry sand paper and then rub it down w/ acetone.

Use Bulldog adhesion promoter! I can't recomend this stuff enough. It goes on clear, and it'll make the paint stick better.
Most of the gray was gone from mine, and I had tried using just a generic primer on a friends Cougar, then painting it black. i peeled off in days.
I removed any lose paint, lightly scuffed it with some #00 steel wool, then sprayed oin two coats of this sstuff, then used Duplicolor bumper and trim paint. I used a metalic charcoal gray for a little extra flair.
Mine has been on there a couple years now, and does not scratch easily. I use the Bulldog stuff whenever I feel like I need a little extra adhesion.
Can't say where I got it, but look around at your local Pep Boys, NAPA, etc...
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

here's a hint -- you can actually remove the rubber from the trim -- just a few tabs to bend back, and the rubber will come right off.

careful with the tabs tho, they can break off.

i repainted alot of the trim on my 92 mustang. lightly sanded it with a fine grit sand paper, cleaned it with alcohol, then spayed a couple of coats of trim paint. holding up just fine.

                Painting Trim

If you have access to spray equipment, and you strip the trim, sand the trim with fine sandpaper and then prime with PPG's DP series epoxy primer. Follow that then with the final color coat. Just follow the instructions given in the P-sheet for best results.
