Does anyone have any personal preference or disgust with an aftermarket 2.5" or 3" dual setup on an 86'? I have put them on 5.0's before, but I don't know what will sound the best with the turbo's natural sound. I really want to scare and piss off the guy down the street with a grand national!
I have a local-shop-made 3" downpipe, 3" high flow Flowmaster cat, & dual 2.5" from there back with 2 chamber Flowmasters on my 86. It has a pretty aggressive sound, but certainly not to the point of being obnoxious (my wife would disagree, but oh well. ) If I had it to do over again, I might tame it a bit & go with the 3 chambers, but it really comes down to personal preference. My setup is by no means loud by hot-rod standards, but it's louder than stock. Hope that helps.
Well I was wondering if the 2 chamber Flowmasters sounded more V-8 like you know like deep or is it more high pitched like import cars and does anyone know if 1 chambers sound good or not that's what I've been considering.
Thanks for the flowmaster tip. The thought of a one chamber sounds almost like it would be too much. I also have an 86' supra that my brother is getting ready to purchase, and it has 2.5 single side system with a high flow one chamber muffler with a very, very deep and loud sound. It's more like a v-8 and scares the pants off the little Honda ricer's around here.
Cool I believe I will go with the 1 chambers when I change cause you know turbo cars love the airflow. I would go with a straight-through design but I am scared of it being too ricey sounding.
I bought a 3" downpipe and had a custom shop run 3" pipes in the factory route (he did adjust the angle on the "Y" to even things out) and used dual 3" in/out Flowmasters and 2 1/2" Cobra tailpipes. Some kid at a local burger joint literally dropped his jaw when I told him it was a turbo 4. It has a very good sound I think. If I were doing it again, I would choose the same setup.

The only objection I have to your setup is that why did you not option for 3"tailpipes? I've heard that when you decrease at the end with 2.5", you loose the extra horsepower gain that you would have picked up from the 3" pipes. Although I bet it does look pretty cool
I chose the 2.5" tailpipes on the advice of the guy doing the installation....and after watching him cut and fit pipes....works for me. The difference the exhaust change made was incredible! Do look cool too.
Oh, and quoting the kid at the burger joint, "ain't no four cylinder sounds like that!"

yea.. you can manage to squeeze 3 inches over one axle to do a single 3" exhaust, but trying to squeeze duals over would be next to impossible!! (at least mandrel bent 3 inchers)

Have to differ with you on this one. Ryan Cloud just purchased a MAC 3 inch kit for a V8 from SVPU and it fits perfect over the rear axle's. He also picked up some 3 inch mandrel bends and made a 3 inch Y pipe for a complete 3 inch dual setup. Hmmm guess what is going on my car next......
I chose to use the Flowmasters (2 chamber). They're a deep-throaty sound...not at all like a Ricer high pitched Fart Tip sound. I like them...but I still miss the old Lear Jet effect from before.
Gary used a single 3" MAC Cat Back set up and he complained about rubbing, banging, and clearance problems. But, remember, Gary has a Panhard Bar setup on his 84 and his suspension sit way down in the weeds with the Motorsport C Springs he's using.
I do have clearence problems over the rear axle clearing the Kenny Brown rear trac kit w/ panhared bar and FMS C-springs. It's a very close fit, I've had it adjusted twice and its the best it's gonna get. But that's a problem I created NOT due to the MAC system itself.
I would probably stick with 2.5 all the way, just to play it safe. I have been checking prices on suspension pieces to beef up to already factory sweat set up. Also, the two chamber flowmasters are what if been hearing the most praise for, as I would worry that a 1 chamber would sound like a little fruitloop honda. The meaner it sounds the better!
like Ty said, the three inch Mac pipes do fit on an SVO really well,It's tight but they will work. As far as sound goes with the flowpath mufflers that came with the pipes sound good....kind of loud but good. I was running 2 chamber flowmasters on the stock exhaust they sound good but If you are looking to be heard three inch is the way to go!!
