  • Window channel strips

In another thread I asked about the window channel molding and Mike Flemming said to take out the old, just pull, pry, push out the old molding.

I attempted this today and it's a real pain. It just kept braking off in little pieces.

So my question is...is there anything other than the pressure fit that holds these things in? It's probably so hard to get out because it's all hard from 20 years of sun.

    Thanks!

    Hey Vince,

I think that some body shop vendors sell a "release agent" that helps loosen the glue.

They are loose, but they wont come out. They slide back and forth in the channels, they just dont pull out easily.

Just get a large, long screwdriver under them and pry them out. The only thing that holds them in is the pressure fit from original construction and their age.

          Oh sure, blame ME!

I think that we were talking about window run channel. Those are not terribly expensive yet. If Vince means "dew wipes", that's a different story. As Mike knows from Sunday night's chat, two folks here are looking in to run channel alternatives. Once I get to removing a sacraficial outer dew wipe I'll be on the phone with possible suppliers to see what they may have.

            Run channel

Yeah, I'm just talking about the run channel. I have a new set for both sides and as I started to take the old out, it just kept breaking into little pieces. Just wondering if there is an easier way to get it out.

Dew wipes...mmmmmm...I'd like a new set of those.

Man -- that old chanel stuff sux -- My car being from AZ had the same problem -- i used a long screw-driver, got underneath it, and just broke it out, one piece at a time.

THe easiest way I've found is to drill the two 3/8 inch rivits and take the glass out first.
that's funny -- I always thought it was easier to take the chanel out before removing the glass.

                  Outer belt weatherstripping..aka dew wipes.

I've got samples on the way to see if I might be able to replace the wornout weatherstripping on the original units with new. I've looked at the original units and they are just "stapled" onto the belt assembly. Even if these samples pan out, renewing the units would still be a tad pricey. The replacement stripping runs about $4/ft. So I would figure a price of ~$25 per unit plus shipping for just a weatherstrip replacement and another $15-$20 on top of that for a stripped and painted/finished unit.

Would anyone be interested in this service if the samples pan out?
