  • Exterior Trim

Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that the thin side molding, lower plastic rocker extensions and the rubber headlight molding for the 85.5/86 w/clips are NLA.

Has anyone found a source or a substitute for these items?

That's right -- they are no longer available from ford.

The thin moldings, you can get from jc-whitney, or other trim shop, and paint the correct color.

the 'lower plastic rocker extensions' -- I assume you mean side-spats. SVPU has reproduced them in fiberglass.

The headlight rubber is not freaking available. But it's somthing I haven't seen a big demand for (and I don't know why)

No, not the spats, but, the part that starts in front them and runs under the door up to the end of the front wheelwell. Believe it or not, my spats can be saved.

As for the headlight gaskets? Mine are weather worn and have some overspray from a previous repair. The clips that hold them on are almost shot and I'm using a 3M Silicon glue in spots to hold it onto the headlight. It works, but it's not the real deal, if you know what I mean. I'd much rather have new and correct pieces.

those piecses that run along the doors are metal, not plastic. They were on a few mustangs, other than SVO's and are failry easy to find. Since they are metal, they are usually easy to fix as well, if bent, or dinged.

the headlight clips are still available from ford, someone just posted about this the other day.

take the headlight rubber off, and clean it with some type of rubber rejuivnator, the overspray shouldn't be too hard to get off, unless it's really think...

Be very careful when handling the spats. In 86 Ford changed the material (vendor probably) and they are much more prone to cracking. The examples I have seen with a E4XX engineering number on the inside are still flexible, ones with E6XX numbers crack if you look at then wrong.

            Thanks.

I believe I can salvage the headlight rubber, but getting clips would be a great help. I' seach the posts.

Those rocker pieces are actually metal? I didnt think any type of factory effect would be made to last. Btw, do you know how their attached? Screws? Rivets? Any idea?

              Bud;

Thanks for the tip on the Spats. One of mine has a rivet on the top of it that was used to put it back in place. All in all, they seem ok, but I may be better off getting the SVPU pieces.

Something I have to think about.

the metal rocker covers are held on with spring clips.

I'm not sure of the "proper" way to get them off, but I usually unclip the back first (push up and pull out on the top), then unhook the front (the same way) then on the center ones, just push down, and the cover should pull out at the bottom, now lift up.

NOW -- with that being said, I haven't had one of these off in 2+ years, so I could be wrong, but I am close!

EDIT ::YEA -- my 86 spats look like they have imploded!

The side rocker moldings are used on the 82-83 Mustang GLX models. They are made of aluminum and will bend easily if you aren't careful with them. The come in bright finish and black and can be painted gray or charcoal to suit.

The GLX moldings are a few inches longer than the ones used on the SVO. A sharp hacksaw blade solves that problem easily!

The bright finish rocker panel molding is being reproduced. You would have to trim it off about 4" and paint them to match.

                        clips

you speak of the rubber headlight rubber trim and 'clips' in the same context. do you mean the clips that hold the rubber to the headlights of the clips that hold the headlight into the bucket?
the clips that hold the headlights into the buckes are still available from ford under part # e5zz-13a147-b.

The clips that "bite" into the headlight's plastic edge and hold the rubber to the assembly. Although I could use the others as well.
