  • Wireing question....long

I'll try to explain this the best I can.

I am redoing some wire in my engin compartment after a fire. I have a connector coming off of the harness behind the turbo, on the firewall. There are two connectors.

One connectore goes to the TPS, the other connector it used to come from the Idle Speed Actuator AND knock sensor (total of 4 wires). On my new harness, I am either missing some stuff or my new harness is all screwed up.

Simply put, here are my three questions.

    1. Connector comming off of the back of the firewall with a green, yellow, black, and grey cable. What does this connect to?
    2. one harness has a connector that goes to the TPS (black, red, and green wires). It also has another connector that looks just like the TPS connector but has black and grey wires. What is this for? My old harness didn't have this.
    3. The old harness had wires coming from the knock sensor to the questionable harness in question #1. My new harness had no such wires or connectors. Am I missing something?

There is a picture of the problem wireing harnesses a few posts down. Thanks!

    Thanks for the help.

    Vince

I'm having a hard time visualising what you are saying, and your pic isn't working..

I can look at my SVO when I get home, but the one thing that comes to mind is the harness that the oil level sensor, oil pressure, temp gauge, and fan kick on sensor are all connect to.

Also dont forget the A/C wires run through there too, and there are 2 wires for that, and you also have the boost contorler, and vam running wires around that area too.

also what year is your SVO ?

It looks like AOL's web pages are down. When I get home tonight I'll post the picture on this page.

Vince, Your picture helps. In fact, I recognize the connector as it runs right along with the TPS connector, but I can't remember what it runs too off the top of my head. I will check it out tonight when I get home and let you know, if someone else doesn't beat me too it.

Vince, it does appear you are missing some items from your "new" harness. I just checked over my 86's harness and I believe I can help a little. My input to your number questions is below:

              1) The four wire connector goes to the following sensors and here is the color code: Gray wire --> IAB, Green wire --> ECT on top of lower intake, Yellow wire --> Knock sensor, Black wire --> Signal return for ECT, TPS, VAF, BP, KS & Self Test connector. So that black wire is a very important wire. It is also pin #46 back at the EEC.

The three wire connector goes to to sensors and here is it's color code: Red wire --> IAB, Orange wire --> TPS, Green wire --> TPS.

Basically the Idle Air Bypass solenoid gets one wire from each of the two connectors.

              2) I looked over my engine's harness a couple of times and can say that an 86 does not have a harness like you are explaining.

              3) It sounds like your new harness is not complete and/or from a different 4-cyl turbo motor.

It really sounds like you need to get a different replacement harness, IMHO. Hope this info helps.

                Hey Ted,

That really helped me out. With your descriptions and what was left of the old harness ...(the green wires looked black, the grey wires looked black, the yellow wires looked black, and the black wires looked...well....black! ) ...I was able to piece together a new correct harness. It actually turned out pretty good. I tested the wires and they should all work. I wont know till tomorrow if everything is hooked up right.

Thanks again for all the help. Couldn't have done it without ya'!

Got the car all back together and after priming the turbo oil line, she started right up. Now the car is off to have the suspension re-setup, new rear main seal put in, and all new fluids. This weekend I'm running "The Night of the Living Dead" It's the CSCC's annual night SoloII event (www.solo2.com). It will be interesting running at night with just parking lights.

You guys on this forum are the best! I really appreciate everyones input on everyones questions.

Vince, I am glad we could help.

Good luck on your run this weekend. It is strange enough going down the dragstrip with just parking lights on, I can only imagine what it would be like going around turns. From the times listed on the website, it won't be completely dark.

What would be wild is to have lighted cones on a dark course with only parking lights on. Of course that wouldn't be too practical from a safety and equipment standpoint, but it would be neat.

I normally run my daily driver in GS for Solo events however I am using this event to shake down my race car prior to my next Time Trial event at California Speedway in September. My race car runs in C Prepared and we run first so there should be some light. They are running Carts, Prepared, and Modified cars in the first run group to give us *some* light. Should be fun but I usually get my butt kicked in CP because they usually group all of the prepped cars in one group because there are only a few of them. So I'm running against AP cars, even with the PAX index I still be creamed. But it's still fun.

                        Later,

Hey, in case it helps to speed up the double checking, I have all the pin out voltages so you can check every thing right at the computer.

                          Pinout voltages

Be prepared to find out that you have other bad sensors you did not know about
