I wonder if I will ever get all these leaks fixed?
My tranny will leak from the tail shaft. I have replaced the rear seal on the tranny and the front driveshaft yolk. The front spindle or yolk felt very good and tight so I opted not to replace the rear tail shaft bushing. I just checked the fluid level and it is right I think. I can touch the fluid with my pinky but it does not come out.
Ant ideas besides replacing the tail shaft bushing? I cannot think of anything else that would cause it though. It wouldnt be a big deal if it didnt leak onto the catalytic convertyer and look like it is on fire.
    Thanks

Did you put a little fluid on the yoke before you installed it through the new seal? Mine did the same thing, I had pushed a little piece of the seal back with the yoke and as soon as you move the car it tears it.

I would get another seal and try it, also make sure that there are no pits on the yoke.

No I did lube the yolk before I installed it. I also replaced the yolk with a brand new one that is perfect. It is frustrating because I have seen no change in the problem with two different yolks and two seals. The old seal looked fine when I removed it and the seal that is in it now is brand new. The old yolk also looked fine but I replaced it anyway.
I have no clue what is going on. I was thinking there might be a leak from somewhere else on the tranny but when I put it on a lift it sure looked fine.

Either the tailshaft bushing is worn, or/and that big spinning hunk of rubber and steel at the front of the driveshaft has gotten off balance and is causing the sides of the yoke to become unseated from the seal. You should possibly feel some vibrations, though, if either of these are happening. Still, check for excess side-to-side play in the yoke as it sits in the transmission.

It is also possible the your vent is plugged and heat and pressure are causing oil to be blown out of the back of the transmission.

I am considering going after that vent. I have had the damper removed and the driveshaft balanced and straightened...twice.
If it is not the vent I will have to replace the bushing and see if that does it I guess.?
          Thanks

This is quite an old thread, but I was wondering if your issue ever got resolved? I'm having the same problem...brand new transmission seal w/ brand new aluminum driveshaft. it's leaking all over the cat and don't know why. If you have any info that would be cool.

If you have a brand new tranny I guess that rules out your bushing.
I sold that car with that problem. I have no idea how to stop it. I wish I knew.
There must be a discrepancy in the size of the yolk and the tranny but I even changed yolks on my car with no resolve????????????????????????????

I believe if the rear output shaft is worn, it will take out the bushing again and then the seal. Other than that, I think everything been covered. Try a different brand seal or buy the Ford replacement. It's probably the cheapest part and the cheapest to make, so very easy for them to make a bad batch.

I may have the problem fixed (knock on wood). I think the new seal did the job, just that there was some fluid still in the yoke shaft and it may have just been releasing that fluid. The new seal I put in has a drain hole on the bottom and I think it was just releasing the extra fluid. I still have some smoking underneath but no visible signs of leaking, I think it's just burning off the excess fluid and engine degreaser I used to clean everything off.

You can get a rear seal for a T5 at any auto parts store.
