My SVO is beautiful except for the corroded and stained wheels (I guess the previous owner used an incorrect cleaner and wrecked the clearcoat) I also have really bad "black spots" from brkae dust corrosion on the two front wheels (in the rough cast spots.) I'm in BC Canada so Wheel Worx in Maryland isn't the greatest option (please give me info for them anyway though!)
Thanks for the compliment on the forum, I really appreciate the feedback.
After 16 years, it don't make much difference what kind of cleaner the previous owner used on the wheels, clearcoat just dont last that long. I think about everybody's wheels are yellowed, and peeling (except Bill Hatfield's 26 mile SVO)
The SVOCA has a deal with wheel worx of maryland . I have seen their work, and they look brand new (or better) when you get your wheels back.
the deal is, SVOCA members get wheels reconditioned for $75 per wheel (regular price is $100 per wheel) including return shipping, wheels must be sent without tires.
If you add that up, that deal is more than enough to pay for your membership. (as most of our member deals are!)
There are other people/places that do this work, some are good, some are questionable.
As far as doing it yourself, personally, I wouldn't spend the 4 hours it takes to do it for $75 per wheel....
Thanks for the quick reply Eric... can you give me some contact info for Wheel Worx? I'd like to see what kind of shipping rates he'd offer me. Thanks again!
Wes, I don't know for sure what is available there in your part of the world, but we have a large chain here called Hubcap Annies. They do wheel refinishing and they do a great job. I have a wheel that literally had chunks missing from the outermost lip. They rewelded those in, straightened and polished. Looks better than new.
This is what I did, Back in '86 when my SVO was still new, I didnt like the finish on the wheels, so I took them off, had them sanded flat and smooth and had them chrome plated.
Some of the chrome has chipped off (when new tires were installed) but overall they are still clean and shiny.
The cost at that time was $100 each wheel, btw... Michellin Pilot Sports are the BEST tire I have found for the car.
I am out here in Northern California. Do the people in Maryland do that good of a job that I should ship my wheel across the country of is there someone out here that people have heard about that does a high quality job for around the same price?
I am fighting myself and trying not to go with the great looking 98 Cobra wheels. Do people here think it is better to keep that "stock look" or just go for in and modify the looks of the car? The engine is already done, but the interior and exterior are still stock and very beautiful.
