  • bog down!

Ok, my 1984 svo has 114k on it. In first and 2nd at 14psi its fine but in 3rd at about 3500 or 4000 rpms if i keep the peddle down it bogs down, and shakes and doesn't accelrate as quick, same as 4th but like 3000rpms and in 5th 2700 or so. I've changed the spark plugs at first, thought that my be it and i put some fuel injector cleaner in yesterday that didn't help and i drove about 50 miles to let it go through... im clueless to what this might be, and I hate bogging down like this!!
also a friend said that it could be my Catalytic converter cause its orignal...
HELP ME any ideas are greatly apperciated...
    thanks

sounds like it could be the cat. converter to me. That would be my first place to check.

A couple of things to look at. You need to put a fuel pressure gauge on the car to see what the pressure is doing under boost. You can pick one up at Sears for about $30.

The 84's have a primer pump in the tank to push fuel to the main pump that is located on the rail. If it goes out it kills the fuel pressure. Also when was the last time you changed the filter?

Another thing to check would be the vane meter. The 84's did not have an oil seperator to help keep oil from coming down in front of the turbo and being pushed into the vane meter. Oil can coat the ACT sensor that hangs down in the front part of the vane meter and it will make the car miss and lay down under boost.

I have always used carb cleaner to clean mine but there are a lot of contact cleaners that are not as harsh.

And it possibly could be the cat. converter.

Just a couple of things that have gone wrong with mine. Hope it helps.

Ty sees it like I am. In short, sounds like you're detonating. Fuel delivery, plugs (check the gap), wires, etc... or check the Knock Sensor. It could be picking up something "rattling" under the hood...

well, I just ran across something similar with my car.

The little round black "thing" (I can't remember what it is called off the top of my head) that has a vacume connection on one end, and a electrical plug on the other, and sits right around the brake booster.

The electrical connection on mine had come un-plugged, and anything above 2800 rpm would spit , spudder, and sound really ugly.. I could baby it, and get it up farther, but it was still running on the ragged edge.

I found that, replaced the connection, and WHAM!! I was back to WFO

84's do not have this piece. It is a 85.5-86 part. It varies the voltage to the in-tank fuel pump if I remember right.

I Didn't know this was a 85.5-86 thing tho.. I assumed all SVO's used it
