  • ??about building my new (hopefully stroker) engine

Today I went and picked up a jy motor to build my new engine with. It's a 32K mile '91 DIS 2.3 complete engine.

My first question is, can I use the accessories off this engine and still have room for the distibutor? It doesn't look like there is much room between the lower intake and the alternator and powerstering pump bracket.

Second is, has anybody built a stroker recently and have any words of wisdom? My plan is to get a 2.5 ranger crank from a junkyard or new (Racer Walsh, Esslinger) and use this block as the basis for a stroker motor.

Also, are there any other options (short of using a tall deck block or over borring the heck out of your cylinders) or is 2.5 as big as you can go?

I have seen kits to go as far up as 3.0 strokers.. I believe Joe P. has a 2.8

as far as your distributor, the block should be the same, but you wil probably have to swap intakes.  As I remember, that engine has a long place on the lower intake for the computer module, and it would most likely hit the distributor.

A couple of other things you want to think about

oil return drain-- You will have to make one somewhere.. either put a hole in the oil pan, or machine the block.

RODS -- Stay away from the stock 2.5 rods.. they are VERY weak, even by NA standards.  You will need to use something better.( at least use crowers)

Pistons -- I'm sure you know you need to put some forged pistons in it

You will need some type of spacer/adapter to go on the mains... The 2.5 crank has smaller main journals than the 2.3, so you will need to get the adapters from someone.  These adapters are very expensive for what they are IMHO.

other than that, you should be in pretty good shape.-- doing a stroker after ford came out with the 2.5's is really easy!

Yea, after looking at the two engines side by side the old style intake is shaped different and will allow room for the distributer even with the late model power stearing pump bracket.

I think the biggest issue I see right now for fitting on the latemodel unibelt accessories is the AC compressor and it's idler pully. It looks like I will have to make custom ac lines and possibly alter the Spearco intercooler tubes to clear.

I don't think the turbo oil drain is gonna be a big deal, I'll probably drill and tap the block in the thick area by the motor mount bolt holes.

As far as I know, the '91 block I have has the same size main journals as the 2.5 crank so I won't need any adapters.
