  • Gasket between turbo & exhaust manifold?

Is there supposed to be a gasket between the exhaust manifold & the turbo? My Chiltons says so, but it also says there "might" be one from manifold to the block... It's really vague..
My SVO developed an exhaust leak while sitting for a year, and I'm trying to track it down. It seems to be coming from that area.

Oh Yea, What kind of wrench can I use to get to the bolts mounting the turbo to the manifold??? It doesn't even seem to have enough room if I modified one of my wrenches with my bench grinder!
Also, the waterline fitting can't be removed to get to the top front bolt because it hits the manifold when turning... Yet you can't get to the bolt with it there! I don't know how I assembled that in the first place! And I haven't even gotten to trying to get to the lower ones! They look just as fun!
What is the proper assembly order when putting one of these on from scratch?

Anyone want to share any tricks?

    Gasket/turbo

Yes Indy, there is a gasket. Its a metal/tin gasket that does go between the turbo and exhaust manifold. I don't have a part # right now, but I'm sure someone can get it to you.

As far as removal, my turbo is not water cooled(84') so I can't give info about that, but the easiest way I found to get to those nuts was to remove the whole exhaust manifold and turbo assembly. That way you have access to all of them without braking your back and can use an open end wrench.

Another option for the lower nuts is to jack the front right of the car, with support under the subframe. With the front wheel hanging, there's a little room to get an arm up there. Its also a good way to unbolt the oil drain line if you decide to remove the turbo/manifold.
Someone may have an easier way, especially for just installing just the gasket, but thats how I did it recently.

Having just gone through this I think taking the entire assembly (exhaust manifold and turbo) out as one piece will work best.

      Drain coolant
      Unbold manifold
Disconnect all misc. hoses and wires from turbo
Jack up front of car (be sure to use jack stands)
      Unbold Oil line
      Disconnect coolant line
      Unbold turbo from down tube
Unbold turbo support bracket from the block

Take entire assembly out of car being carful not to bend the oild return line too much. With the entire assembly out of the car, you should be able to get an open ended wrench on the nuts from the turbo to manifold.

When I put it back to gether, I started with bolting the manifold to the block, then the downtube, then the support bracket, then all the other oil and coolant lines.

Of course someone else might have an easier way but that how I did it.

      Good luck!
Hoping to get on the track soon

        Part number for that turbo

So does anyone have that friggin part number then (gasket from manifold to turbo? I need it. I replaced all my gaskets last year when i put on my brand new E6 from FORD ($200 ) cuz i thought my old one was cracked. Anywayz, i bought it as a set in Cali but now im in Phoenix and no one(Checker, Autozone) has it. I havent tried Napa yet but im almost posotive they got it. Does anyone have the part number for it so that i don't go in there getting the wrong thing? There is a noticeable loss of power and spool up time is greatly increased. I changed the block to manifold gasket but still, same thing. There is also an exhaust leak you can hear near that area. Manifold and turbo dont looked cracked.

BTW, i went to Pioneer Ford and they told me could get it in like three days but that i would have to buy like 2 at one time and that they cost about $12 each. They said i needed to buy them as a set. I walked straight outta 'der.
