Has anyone heard about this roller camshaft? It supposedly is a very good performance oriented design. Is it Streetable?

Dave at Tiny Avenger had a review of it in MM&FF.

I will throw in my $0.02 on this one, since I am friends with Martin (one of the co-designers of the cam and owner of AMS). I also do not have any connection or benefit from people buying the AMS cam.

From the cam specs, that cam should be very streetable and should be classified as a "mild" cam. If you compare it to the FMS A237 roller cam it should have a smoother idle, but a better top end because of the greater lobe separation bleeding off less boost during valve overlap.

Martin and Fritz Moore (sp?) designed the roller cam for the 2.3L based on some pretty complicated design parameters. Basically they didn't pull the design out of their you know whats. The cam they offer was designed for a basically stock or very mildly modified engine in mind. The gains that they saw on Fritz's car in the MM&FF article were not representative of the gains you would see on a stock engine, since Fritz's car is well beyond stock. That is not to say you won't see a HP increase, they just don't have any dyno data to know what it is.

Last time I talked with Martin about this cam, he and Fritz were working on a new design that was taylored for a more modified setup, but that it wouldn't be produced any time soon. The current cam isn't a "hot" seller, so the market demand hasn't put it on the top of their list right now.

A fellow 2.3L turbo owner was supposed to bring his car to AMS and do a dyno run and cam swap to compare the AMS cam against what he was running last month. I will have to check with Martin to find out if it ever happened and what the results were. If I find out something I will post it here.

Didn't they use Randy Shiltz's (sp?) car for the test? Not Fritz'z?

Turbopit, you are right it was Randy's car not Fritz's. Sorry about any possible confusion, it has been a long week at work...too long.
