  • 17x8 GT Rims (6 spoke) What size tire won't rub.

    I've seen a few Svo's with the 94-95 17x8 6 spoke rims.
I'm just curious what size tire wont rub..
I had problems with other rims...
I had 16x7.5 94-95 ponys with 225/50/16 and the rub in the back over bumps and it isn't lowered (YET).
If i use a 225/50/17 will it rub.

    thanks for the help

    Richard,

Your rubbing is more related to rim backspacing/offset than tire size, from your description. The SN95 rims have less backspacing / more offset depending on how you look at it. This pushes the tire further out from the mounting hub. See my info in the other thread in this topic's forum.

The 17's you mention will have similar problems as the 16's you had. The only way to minimize the rubbing is to go to a shorter tire. A 245/45R17 tire is the largest tire I would recommend on a SN95 rim, especially a 17x8" version. That size tire is still just over 3/4" taller than the 225/50ZR16 stock tire. You could go to a 245/40ZR17 tire, that would give you a tire just slightly (maybe 1/8") shorter than the stock tire size.

I had 245/50ZR16's on my stock rims in back and encountered rubbing with the fender lip when I had my car loaded with 4 people and our luggage, but never during normal driving. I am currently running 245/45ZR17's on 17x8" '96 Cobra rims and haven't had an issue rubbing, but I see definite contact issues if I really load it down and hit a good dip. So far I haven't had any contact with just me in the car and hitting a couple of good dips on some railroad crossings.
