  • Engine Manament Systems and Emissions Testing

Does anyone know or have an opinion on which system (SDS, TwEECker, EEC Tuner, ect...) is best to use if you live in an emissions testing area. Texas has just started a new testing program in Dallas/FtWorth and non of the shops I've called have been able to tell me anything (I guess it's too new for them also). I assume all the different systems can be programed with different settings, but is there one that works better to bring a modified car back inline with original specs to pass a test?

I want to get the most out of my new engine, but at the same time, I don't want to end up with a car I can't registor

    Lon,

I would guess that any programmable system would be OK to use. Just make sure you keep a "stock" or emissions tuned program handy to load and run when you have to bring it in for testing.

Our 2.3L engines are actually pretty clean and should still be able to pass emissions with modifications. My car can pass the Illinois IM240 (roller dyno) testing w/o a catalytic converter, if you keep it out of open loop (i.e.- under 3000 rpm or boost). This is with running an FMS roller cam, which is notorious for killing emissions.

The EEC Tuner and most likely the TwEECer (haven't actually seen one yet but the concept is the same as the Tuner) would be your best bet as they are boards that fit inside the ECU so they would never be noticed by an emissions inspector. Also I believe the stock tune on these engines is a little on the rich side in areas of the rpm band and retuning them properly can only help emissions.
