  • Cheap Exhaust

My stock SVO exhaust is in very lousy shape. Everything from the cat back is rusted and falling apart. Not to mention the previous owner decided to hollow out the cat for better performance... whatever.

Anyway, I dont have alot of cash and was wondering what the best thing would be to fix this situation. I'm in California and have to get it smogged, so I need working exhaust soon.

Unfortunately I'm not very good at welding which would make this alot easier but the only thing I've come up with, so far,is to buy a cat on ebay, for like $60 buy a Y pipe for $40 and take the back end of some dual exhaust from a 5.0 for like $50 at the junkyard. I'd figure around $300 total with labor. Any other ideas? I need it soon, and as cheaply as possible.

    Thanks for your help, Sean

For around $400 a good shop can make you a complete single 3" system including the cat and muffler. Don't waste your time trying to mickey this yourself.

Hit up the local shops in your area. Christmas is coming and this is a slow time of the year for them. Haggle and negociate a deal for yourself! Play one against the other to get your business.

Your profile says that you own an 84, so why would you need a Y-Pipe? That's just extra weight anyways. Single exhaust is half the work and just as efficient. Many muffler shops can get left side replacement parts within a few hours. Check out your options.

Yes single exhaust. You're not going to get a 3" over the axle cheap or easy. Go with a pre-bent 2.5" over the axle and a good high flow 2.5 cat. I recomend Radom Technoglogy for the cat.

          exhaust

Check out the MAC 3" driver's side for the LX, I think I paid like $250 for it. It has what I think is a 2 chamber hollow muffler and it goes over the axle with a nice 4" chrome end. You can find a universal 3" cat for about $50 at Summit...maybe get the 3" dp and you're in business.

Dual exhaust would sound a little better than single exhaust, correct? I mean it would make it a little deeper. That's what I plan on doing to mine, but if it will not change the sound I will probably stick with the single exhaust.

Stick with theingle exhaust. It sounds much the same as the dual . It isn't worth the added weight, complexity and expense to fit the dual on an 84.

                PART #??

"Check out the MAC 3" driver's side for the LX"

Does anybody know of a part # for this kit?? i've checked with a buddy that is a MAC dealer in my aera & said that there is no kit like that.. only 5.0l stuff.. if i can get a pt# then i can have him get one for my '84 SVO..

                thanks, dave

I just dual exhaust on my SVO.

                  It cost me ......

                  120.00 for tail pipes
130.00 for 2 spintech mufflers, which i might add, sound awesome and are small enough to get around the fuel pump junk.
200.00 for a custom Y pipe and welding.

The car is not obnoxious, and sounds just like a 5.0 at idle (keep in mind i have the A 237 cam).

thats my 2 cents. If you got one tail pipe and one spintech muffler it would be cheaper.

boostedbruiser, is spintech a brandname?? If so Jeg's or Summit carry them?? What size did you use?? it looks kind of tight under there.. i'd love to put duels on it (looks better in my opinion), but wasn't sure about all the work envolved..
Mine is still stock right now, but anything should be better than the stock stuff..

                    thanks alot.. dave

Yes, you can use the 5.0 stuff...after the cat, there is no difference. That's what he meant by the LX (5.0) or otherwise. It's all compatible.

Thanks for the info.. Then all i have to do is to get a y-pipe from an '86 svo and i should be good to go?? The 5.0l cat back bolts right to the y-pipe?? just a bolt on??

You don't need a y-pipe...I would just get a 3" downpipe from Bob or Stinger In fact, Stinger has entire exhaust systems....
But with either downpipe and a cat you could get the mac system for a sriver's side 5.0 and have a good exhaust shop fab it all together for you. IMHO a single 3" is a more efficient setup anyway...so if the extra $100-$200 is worth it to you simply for aestethics, go for it. Otherwise, stick with the single.

                            Is it just me...

With all due respect to any vendors and or members, is it just me, or do the Bob's Logs have a very unfinished look to them? I know a lot of folks are using them, but I just wished they were cleaner looking for the big price tag. Kinda looks like a bunch of iron pipe elbows and tees welded together. Has anyone ground down the welds to make em' more appealing and clean looking?
