I did a search and found some members have powdercoated their rims but not the original svo rims. I dont have much money to throw at my 1C but i want a different look and was thinking about powdercoating the ORIGINAL svo rims black. What are you suggestions? I have asked another member if the wheels would temper or crack because of the heat and he said no, is this true? Its not that i dont believe him but i want to get another opinion so im not out of commision for a while finding a new rim.

Question about powdercoating

I don't think the process gets hot enough to crack the wheels or even cause warping because of the metal's thickness. It just hot enough to baked the coating onto the metal surface. I've seen much thinner metal that's powdercoated with no ill effects.

Most black wheels I've seen get lost. The detail just doesn't show and the wheel/tire are just looks like a black hole.
The only exceptions are where you have a polished lip, or some other detail to break up the blackness.
I've done a lot of research on powder coating, and once I'm back to work, a home powder coat system is on my wish list. I already have a junk oven that was sitting in my old garage so I don't have to catch heck from the wife for using the good oven.
Now, a gunnetal gray or something... that might be cool.If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

Here's my car with black Ronal's.

Here is a good contrast between the three. I really like the white wheel's on Lisa's 01, and then we have Rich's SVO with the plolished wheel's and my SVO with the black wheel's.
I will either be switching back to my polished wheel's or powdercoating the Ronal's white.

As far as the SVO wheels holding up to powdercoating.........they will.
Pat's friend (and other's too) Bill Hatfield has a really neat set of SVO wheels that I would love to see in person, as pictures never really do things justice.
His are chromed with the cut-outs powdercoated white. the car is a b-e-a-utiful 7B blue, and the subtle hint of that white powdercoat really is unique, and quite creative too.
pics are here at this thread:

I've been thinking of picking up a spare set and doing this for my 86 1C. I would definetly go with a polished lip as someone else mentioned.Originally posted by punchit
