    Today's installment - Part Three:
So the temp engine has been using oil, leaking oil, and has a slight wrap at start-up. So I bit the bullet this past weekend and pulled the engine for the third and final time (I say this because if there ever ends requiring a X4 - the car is going bye-bye).

So first order was to pull the engine so I could swap the head from the current {temp} short block to the fully rebuilt / original short block:

Then prep'd the original short block for a new coat of Ford Gray paint:

Painted, studded and ready for the head:

Back together and almost ready to drop back in:

    Old pig outside:

New pig back under the hood:

All the above work was completed starting Friday night through Sunday.

Working on it Mon and Tues nights, I finished up installation / connection. Last night I primed the oil system, fired it up, and let it run a bit at 2k RMP's. Still need to set the timing (didn't get to that last night).....

Thanks Mike! Maybe next year. Too much going on this summer to get away....

    - - - Updated - - -

And it's a wrap. Set the timing tonight, finished up a few other details. Then backed it out of the garage and went for a short / quick test drive:

This engine runs so much smoother compared to the temporary short block that I just removed. Glad it's swapped!

    - - - Updated - - -

Here are pics of the short block from when it first came back from the rebuilder:

And a few pics of the carnage that survived, note the discoloration of the big end:

And the caps (these were the #1 and #2 rods):

Last note - the "temporary" engine block from part deux lived in the car for just about 23k miles during 5+ years. Fingers crossed for many more years of happy SVO motoring with the new-new engine!

Nice work! Heh, I had to laugh at the picture of the head assembly dangling from the engine hoist, but dang those things are effing heavy!! When I did the head gasket many years ago, someone mentioned they'd pulled the head/turbo/exhaust/intake as one assembly. I unbolted the manifolds from the head, and it was ALL I could do to lift the head off the engine while standing IN the engine compartment. I handed it to my wife, who was standing outside of the engine compartment. Sure, I may be a weakling, but there's NO way to pull the head/manifolds/turbo w/o using a hoist.

Back in the garage - going to re-torque the head studs tomorrow. Also have a noisy HLA, hopefully that's obvious once the VC is off. I have 2 new HLA's ready to go in.

Oh, and now the pinion seal started leaking..... Grrrrrr

So no time this past weekend for the pinion seal - I'll get to that sometime in the next week.

Did re-torque the head studs. Nothing obvious on the HLA's (ie all felt fully pressurized). But I did go ahead and pull each one out of the head and dis-assemble and clean. Most had some nasty junk inside. I'll give it a week or so to see if they quiet down before I decide on the next step. I wonder how much to local dealer would give me on a trade for a new eco-boost mustang....

if it was my local ford dealership, you'd pay them $2000 to take your car.

Trade in your DD, not your SVO...that way you can have a matched set!
