What is the most you can expect in horsepower without changing the intercooler?

I was curious about modifications without changing the look of the car under the hood. And curious what horsepower I might expect. Has anyone done a lot of mods keeping the stock look?

I'm still using the stock IC for my track car. I have a stage 3 Boport ported aluminum head, Boport 2.1 cam, Gutted and ported upper, 60lb/hr injectors, Rod's header, bored 0.040 over, and T04B upgraded stock turbo by charlie at Evergreen turbo, a PIMP EC, cold air intake, and 3" DP into 2.5 duals w/o cat. At 20 PSI of boost, I am making at least 275 RWHP.

300 hp with the stock ic is possible, I'd not expect it to go above, and it's limited even more when it's heat soaked.

I know I am at 270 RWHP with the stock unit like Mike, so it can support ~100 hp increase over stock. I know a true stock 86 puts ~160-170 RWHP. I am sure it isn't as effective at the higher HP, but it still can support the flow.

Sorry to drift slightly off topic, but Mike, how do you like the PIMP system now that you have had some time with it? I would bet loosing the VAM is good for about 10 of those extra ponies? but how good and reliable is the speed density way of operating the system?

I'd bet losing the vam is worth a bit more than 10hp

You could replace the intercooler core with a Bell unit, it looks stock but flows better.

I'm happy with the PIMP. The latest version of the firmware and Tuner Studio make it run better than before and I finally figured the settings to make the cold start similar to stock.

What did you do to get the cold start and idle to act normally?

I had to upgrade to the latest firmware and tweak the configuration. With the new firmware comes hints for the various setting of what it should be for the 2.3T motor. I found out theat my IAC setting from Stinger were setup for a V8 chevy. I'll post my settings when I'm on my laptop.

E85 conversion (52 lb injectors, adjustable FPR, wideband O2 for tuning), 3" downpipe, manual boost controller.
Stock EVERYTHING else (ECM, head, motor, manifolds, turbo, VAM, etc).

205 hp, 270 ft at rear rear wheels.

Thanks, will look through it. I got mine to idle OK but what happens is the hotter it gets, the richer it runs. Goes from the 14's all the way down into the 11's. Haven't fooled with it in a few months though because of other things going on. And the plan is to take it Charlotte and have Kiser tune it on a dyno.

I think if you use the compare tune function in Tuner Studio, you will see exactly where the differences are. By the way, Wes also tuned mine, but didn't really fiddle with the cold start and idle while I was on the dyno.

He did activate the timing advance idle function which helped alot.
