    Turbo rebuild issues

I recently rebuilt my turbo due to the drain line being kinked after installing a new header. 5 minutes into idling the engine, I heard a 'tinking' sound. Tons of shaft play.... Just tore down the turbo to find that my turbine shaft measures 9.84mm instead of 10.14mm.... Any of you ever measured the shaft of the stock turbo? I am unsure of the exact turbo on my car. Appears to be a t3/t4 with the 5 bolt flange. I also downsized the compressor housing from a .63 to a .48 when i did the header install due to external cracks in the .63 housing. Also, my turbo lock nut is a 6 point RIGHT hand thread. ugh haha

Ended up using my old bearings, because i was unable to find the correct size. Luckily the old bearings were still in spec.

Also note the difference in thrust collars. The left set is what most t3 t4 turbos use, on the right, is my setup. I used the new brass thrust washer with my old collar.

Good job. This is one thing I've never dug into on my SVO. The original turbo went out several years ago and it's currently just sitting in a box in the basement. Maybe I should tear it apart and rebuild this winter.

I too have never dived into a turbo to check out the insides...luckily never had too (knocking fiercely on wood). I would think the specs for the stock shaft should be out on the interwebs somewhere. My stock turbo is up in the rafters of my garage, was running when I took it off and I have been running a Turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid for ~18 years now. Purchased it from Martin @ AMS back when he was starting up and had just become a Turbonetics dealer.
