  • Crank Pulley

I know this is a stupid question, but I can't break the crank pulley bolt loose!!

Which way do you turn the bolt that holds the crank pulley to loosen it?

lefty loosy, Give up and get an impact wrench. I went through this last year. I had a 6foot breaker bar on mine and had the car in gear with the parking break on and the muther F%&*#@ would not come loose. I hit it with an impact and it came off like butter. Where in CT are you I am near Danbury. I could help you out if you want.

No ECU yet. BTW, what's the torque wrench setting for installing it, or should I just use the impact?

              setting

I want to say 62(not sure) but I gave up and used the impact because I couldnt get the pully to stay put while i was torking it down. ( damn laws of physics) I know it was in the chiltons though. BTW the CPU will be there tomorrow.

                        Neat trick

Well, I too have had to fight with crankshaft bolts. If I had an impact gun that was up to the task that would be great but the one I have is a POS. Can't even break a lug nut loose.

Anyway, this is a trick I learned and it works, I've tried it. Place a regular socket wrench over the bolt (1/2 wrench is best). Make sure the wrench is set to loosen (i.e apply torque counter-clockwise). Prop the end of the wrench under a secure block of wood (preferably a 4x6 cut to length or shimmed). Remove the coil wire. Put the car in nuetral or step on the cltuch and bump the starter via the ignition switch. When the engine turns over it will break the crankshaft bolt free.

Its a bit red-neck, but it does work. Its only takes a brief second of cranking the engine. You can also see why its important to prop the end of the wrench properly. Try this method at your own risk. If you lack common sense do NOT try this at home

That ALOT a redneck. I've seen some backyard heros use that method before too. It's a great way to earn a Dawinism award than anything.
