  • 84 SVO fuel pump swap

Changing to a 255 Walbro intank pump. Tank removal was a breeze. New pump hasn't come in the mail yet so I am trying to sort out the rest of the swap. So I start working on removing the external fuel pump, I went to the local parts store and asked for a 93 Ranger filter, guy comes back with a filter that is the same as my stock SVO fuel filter. Is this the right one? looks like it may work, but I haven't actually tried it yet. I still need to get more of the fuel line retaining clips. I am just trying to make sure I have the right filter first. Is this the right one?

look at the size of the pump inlet and outlet, then look at the filter inlet and outlet--- they should be the same size.

Pulled my intank pump out last night, did Walbro make pumps for Ford? Low and behold thats what came out of my tank. Looks factory, as that the wires are not spiced. I don't know if the owner before me swapped pumps.

Does it matter what way the fuel pump sock goes on?

          yes--

there is a area in the tank that is blocked off to hold fuel, even when in turns. The sock must fit in that area -- if it is turned the wrong way, it wont.

So the only concern with possibly installing the sock at the wrong angle is that the pump assembly won't seat into the tank?

              84 fuel pump swap info

I have some info to dispell 84 SVO external pump replacement rumors. To replace the external fuel pump with a fuel filter you can use a FRAM G-3850 or NAPA FIL3296 fuel filter. These both have the longer ends required to connect the fuel lines. 90's Ranger size filters are too short as is an SVO filter. Others may have made these work, but the FRAM and NAPA are an direct drop in. When my 255lph hi press pump comes in I will share info on how the pump fits the stock bracket. Oh yeah Fun Ford Weekend is Nov 1 & 2 @ LACR for you So Cal guys and girls.

Well I have found out the fuel pump sock installation is kinda fool proof. The sock supplied with the Walbro pumps has an idex mark so pump to sock orientation will be correct. I have heard that the fuel pump bracket on the 84 SVO has to be modified to fit the larger 255 Walbro. I did not have this problem, it was a direct drop in with no mods to the bracket at all.

Yes, I believe that Walbro DID make the pumps for Ford. Every one that I have replaced has been a Walbro...

Congrats on your installation...nice when everything fits like it should, eh? Hopefully you didn't make the same mistake as me and not put some oil/grease on the gasket at the tank to filler neck...I get a leak on a really full tank, and since I am too lazy at this point in time to pull it all apart again, I just don't fill it all the way up...

Yeah, I used some petroleum jelly on the filler neck and the rubber gasket under the pump bracket. Helps to hold it in place.

I've got my pump to swap in before the reunion.

Will, will you clarify on the external pump/Ranger Filter. Which one did you get?

Also, I was told there was a resistor in the interior just over the tank on the wiring harness going to the fuel pump that needs to be removed...Anyone know if this is true or necessary?

                      Thanks,

I had to remove the panel covering the tail light assembly, there is a very short segment of ground wire before it turns into resistance wire. It starts out black and then turns into the brownish resistance wire. I spliced in some 10 gauge and grounding it to the body.

I did the same thing with the wire on my 84 (Thanks SVOMikey). If I remember correctly mine was wrapped in the section of harness going to the body plug for the fuel tank. I unwrapped it and found the crimpsplice on it a cut and grounded it. Re wrap for protection and you're done! Happy hunting!

I am in the process of doing the 255 swap in an 84 SVO. I have two questions concerning the swap. First question is about the ground wire should I just cut it where the resistance wire starts and ground it or add some additional wire then ground it? Second is the external pump equivilent to the ford motorsport external pump and what is the maximum pumping pressure?
