  • Flaming River Solid Steering Shaft

This product rocks! After replacing my torn 84's steering shaft with a used stock one, I thought that was an improvment. Then on my 86 race car, I decided to try the Flaming Rivers product and that thing is solid! No more steering play what so ever. And it really wasn't that hard to put in. Too bad it burried under the car because it looks really nice too! If you ever need to replace your steering shaft because the rag joint has disintegrated, go for this piece, you wont be sorry.

Also I bet if you have any play in your steering wheel, your rag joint is probably bad.

Here are some pictures of my project. It took me about 2 hours to complete but I do need to take it back out and re-allign the steering wheel. It's about 5 degrees off center.

Also here are some tips when doing your project:

When you park the car and put it up on jack stands, make sure the wheels are pointing directly forward and the steering wheel is strait.
Undo the bold at the top of the shaft first. It's really on there good.
Next do the two bolts holding the main shaft to the rag joint.
You should now be able to take the main shaft off the bracket that holds it to the steering rack. If the shaft is in too tight to get off of the steering column that comes out of the firewall, use a hammer and lightly tap on the lower part of the shaft, downwards. It should come right out (I spent about 20 minutes trying with my hands to brute force it out, and about 20 seconds with the hammer ).
Next do the bolt that holds the bracket to the steering rack and take the bracket off.
Be sure to follow the instructions from Flaming River to the T. The are short instructions but very important to do each step. And be sure to dimple every set screw location.
After you dimple, put it all back together and tighten everything up but DONT set with Loctite yet...take it for a very short test drive just to see if the car drives strait.

Gotta go...need to order another one for my 84!

I have one on my white 85. AWESOME piece. Don't think I'll ever own another SVO (that I drive) without one.

Here's a direct link to Flaming River But, you can look in any MM&FF magazine and find a Mustang Parts dealer that sells them

I ordered mine through Driveline Services.)
            (910) 739-0747 I spoke with Keith.

The steering column part number for the SVO is FR150P
Cost from Driveline was 149.95 + shipping to CA, I dont think I paid tax.

I got their number from Flamming River.

            Good luck!

              Hi,

Ended up driving over to Flaming River in Berea, OH and had one of their engineers look over the 86 SVO and got the recommended shaft. Paid my mechanic to install and now the car is totally drivable! Man, the road feel is totally better than the stock "rag joint" steering!

                Dante,
Is the shaft you got, the same part number as the one Vince got?

Just for info...that part number is FR1504P and I concur that it is the single best purchase I have made to date. My steering rag joints were so worn that I became frightened driving above 80 mph on the freeway. Not any more!! I guess I can say bye bye to the driver's license!!

They are good. I bought the whole quick ratio kit. The steering is great.

That price seems a bit high. I just checked Flaming River's website and here are the following list prices:

5.0 Mustang High Performance Shaft Kit
                          #FR1504M - $179 (manual)
                          #FR1504P - $182 (power)

79-93 Mustang Low Profile Shaft Kit
                          #FR1504MLP - $165 (manual)
                          #FR1504PLP - $165 (power)

I would think dealers would have lower prices. Either one of the power shaft kits should work on our SVO's. Might want to call Flaming River to help clarify the difference between the 5.0 & Low Profile kits.

Anyone looking at this shaft might also check with Maximum Motorsports. They have one that doesn't use the set screws. It's nicely welded. I will weld mine and remove the cheesy set screws next time I'm under there.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!
