  • Steering question - Rag Joint

I wasn't sure where to put this question, suspension is the closest thing on the forum to steering.

Has anyone ever had to replace their rag joint?

If so where did you get it?

Mine broke, well more like disintegrated, and I can't seem to find one in any of the mustang catalogs.

    Thanks, Sean

        Rag Joint

You can purchase a metal replacement that I am sure someone will give you a reference.

However, we found a kit at Advanced Auto Parts ($6 or $7) that is rubber impregnated with nylon that is made for this purpose and works fine. You will have to ream-out the holes a bit if I remember correctly, but no big problem.

I bought mine at Pep Boys in the Help section. If I remember correctly it's part number 31005. I paid around $6 for it.

You nave to drill out the rivets that hold what's left of the old joint in the steering shaft after removing that section from the car. The new one bolts in with the fasteners and locking nuts included in the kit.

I just did my 224,000+ mile 84 SVO last month and it works fine!

EYELAWDOC hit it on the head.

I have to do the same thing to mine. I just got lazy this weekend and didn't do it yet.
Advance Auto in the HELP section was $10.00, and it's called a steerin coupling disc

BTW, with the "HELP" kit, you will have to open up the 2 holes on the new disc, that are used with the stock bolts that are machined into the safety strap, and won't come out. Use a 1/2 drill bit with extreme patience on the disc.
You will see in the pic (sorta) that the the bolt has a shouldered piece in the shank that won't actually fit it in the hole pre-drilled from the vendor.

How about that "CHINA" tag, huh?
