  • Question in middle of fuel pump swap

    I am putting the Walbro pump in the '84 and have removed the stock pressure pump mounted on the frame rail. I know that most have added a Ranger filter in place of the stock pump, but it seems to me that I could replace the filter in factory location with the longer Ranger filter, cut a hole in the stock filter bracket (towards rear) for the fuel line to pass through, and run the fuel line from the tank directly to the filter. The fuel lines on mine seem to have plenty of slack to make this work.

    Has anyone else done this - would save running two filters and keep it enclosed in the factory filter bracket/housing.

    "I replaced the external fuel pump with a filter and while I was under the car I said to myself " There has got to be a better way." So what I did is drill a 1 1/2" hole on the backside of the fuel filter bracket, used the filter with the longer ends as stated in above posts and mounted a single filter, looks like it was done at the factory."

      Did you have enough slack in the fuel lines to use the stock filter?

        If you are putting a "normal" walboro in the tank and ditching the external pump then don't forget about the factory resistor. Ford put a resistor on the 84's (maybe 85's also) to cut the voltage some on the pump in the tank since it was just a "primer pump". Just run a new ground wire to the frame or tank straps and you should be up to proper voltage. If I'm giving you wrong information I'm sure someone will correct me.

        EDIT - Also I removed the filter without any hassle. I didn't need to add anything either. It's been almost 10 years since I've done this so it's a little fuzzy right now. If I remember correctly all I had to do was finagle a few things around and remove the extra line that went from the filter to the pump. I *think* I just moved my filter close to where the pump was located......I *think* . Regardless I didn't have to add anything.

            Update

            All is done and ready to put the pump in - but - it came with broken nipple on the pump for fuel supply.

            Is this very common on the Walboro's???
