  • Disconnecting Speedo Cable from Meter Cluster

I am pulling the dash to access the heater core and I can't figure out how to disconnect the speedometer cable from the meter cluster. I am sure that it must be a simple operation but I haven't found the magic combination. Please help my feeble mind unravel the mystery!
    Thanks folks...

oh, also, go into the engine bay and unbolt the retainer clip from the frame rail for the speedo cable so you get some more play out of it and can get it out of the dash more to see what you're doing better.

sometimes that clip gets bent forward and the result is you can barely budge the speedo cable at all to get your hands in behind the cluster to pop it loose.

I was able to access and remove the heater core box without removing any cables or wires (except those that connect to the heater core box). It was a two person job. One person lifted up and pulled out on the passenger side of the dash (be carefull, you shouldn't feel any resistance other than the weight of the dash) while I was able to pull the core box out. I had to rotate the core box towards the front of the car as it dropped down and then pull it out. Also put some plastic or something down on the floor board to catch the coolant that will drain from the heater core and the oil that will drain from the evaporator core if you didn't cap them. One more thing, watch those metal straps that attatch the top of the box, they run along the vinyl on the door panel as it comes out.

If you have enough slack in the cable through the firewall, pull the cluster slightly enough to where you can get your hand along the right rear and disconnect the cable that way.
I took my cluster out last night and I think I finally controlled the arterial bleeding in my hand.. Yup, that's an affirmative.
