  • Meguiars: Back to Black

    Product: Back to Black
    Mfg: Meguiars

I picked this up this weekend for use on the wing, and I gotta say that I am shocked at how well it turned out. I highly recommend it if your wing is oxidized like mine was.

Turtle Wax "Black Chrome" is great on all matt, semi-matt and euro (rubber) bumbers too. But I have been using Back to Black a looonnggg time. Do the wing at least 2 times in the same day. (not just once) It's ok to do it in the sun too. Need a nice fluffy towel and buff like crazy. BTW....this is for unpainted, or stock wings.

not trying to sound sarcastic, but does that stuff actually clean up the oxidation or just turn the wing black and hide it? I'm remembering that wax from long time ago what was colored for whatever color paint you had so it hid scratches and such, but eventually wore off.

how well does this stuff work? the pictures are good.

it's temporary....hides and gives a "restored" look. The only way to truly restore the wing is to clean it up and shoot paint on it

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it just hides it, but in my opinion it worked great. It gave a nice matte black finish to it with just one application, but I still think I need to do another application of it.

The wings did not come paintedfrom Ford, so if you can keep it unpainted you're closer to a stock look.
Only paint it if you absolutely have to and do not care about a stock exterior.
              It a personal thing.
I attached 2 shots of mine unpainted, Back to Black.

So how did they get the 2 trim colors different from 84 to 85+?

I don't know. Maybe the early ones were painted. But I remember looking at the wing on the 84 the local dealer wanted to sell me (when my brother wreck my Escort) and it was not painted. The 85 green one I test drove in Jan 85 also was not painted. My 85.5 was more of a grayish (non-painted). Some kids ripped that wing off while I was at work so I got a new 86 (3rd light) and it is pretty black, not painted. It needs to be gone over with back to black maybe every 2 months, its alway in a garage.

I have been using Meguires “Back to Black” for some time now and its has been working great. It’s definitely not one of the tinted or colored products from the past. “Back to Black” is a white milky white substance that really seems to soak in. The lower bumper cover and fender flares of my 4X4 is (or was) black plastic that sun-bleached to grey and Back to Black brings ‘em back to life.

On my 85 ½ SVO , I've used “Back to Black” exclusively on all of the plastic components under the hood like the vapor charcoal canister the rubber liner that extends below the front frame and around the sway bars with great results
