  • .48 Turbo

Well was pulling my stuff off for my big valve/ported head and Boport 1.5 cam install. I noticed alot of play in my turbo shaft and liiks like the impeler blades are close to the case , when i move it around. I am not comfortible with it like this.
#1 question now becomes what options do I have? Can I get a rebuild kit? Who sells them? I am fully confident on doing this myself.
#2 question is could I jump to a .63 wheel and have my .48 housing machined to work? I would like to keep it stock looking. but move a bit more air to better match the boport 1.5 cam.

If you like the kick in the pants that the 86 has, then stick with the 0.48 but go to a stage 3 wheel. Moving to the 0.63 housing will move the full boost rpm up near the 3k rpm mark. Personally, I like the .48 housing. It all dpends on what you want to do with the car.

Well the Boport 1.5 is RPM range 3000-6500rpm so I want to match the turbo to that get everything working on the same page.

I've got his 2.1 which operates in the same range with more lift, to each his own. If you have an adjustable cam pulley, then you can move it where you want it within reason. Your best bet will be to talk to Charlie at Evergreen as previously suggested. He can match the copressor wheel and turbine based on the car's intended use. The phone call will be money well spent.

We havent used a sonic cleaner on the turbo's at work. Is this something specific to T-3? From time to time I rebuild the 9V-92 turbo from the Detriot Diesels.

Nawww, the ultrasonic cleaner is not something specific to a T-3. Some of us have them at work that are used as as really neat parts cleaners for G-Jobs on old 60's holley carbs and turbos. Basically, the parts need to be squeaky clean and the dimensions have to be within spec on the ID and OD of the bushing so that the shaft floats on the ID and the OD of the housing.

This is way beyond the scope of what the skill level is for of most people here. If you can overhaul and balance your own center section with the required equipment, go for it. For others, call Charlie.

I have bought the rebuild kits, like the kits from the Pop Shop and had success with them. I have had Charlie rebuild them too. Without a doubt Charlies' lasted longer and performed better. Plus it is easier and cheaper to upgrade with him and you get a garrentee.

Well took it apart today and just as he said the shaft had about .0025 wear. So even with new bushings its going to move around. Going to have to send it out to Charlie. Kinda sucks I was thinking I would not have any issues cause the car only has 67K.

sometimes it's the quality of the miles, not the quantity.
