After several intake hose, VAM, and intercooler cleanings, and making sure I have the right PCV valve (I tested it; it holds pressure just fine) I was still getting oil in the intake hose, from the VAM. I then went and bought a separate check valve which I put in line between the PCV and the intake, and made sure I didn't install it backwards. Still getting oil. How could I still be pressurizing the crankcase (just had a big dollar rebuild, by supposedly the best rebuilder in town)? Also, if this means anything, it's not lifting the dipstick, like it was before I had it rebuilt. I also had the turbo rebuilt. WHERE IS THIS OIL COMING FROM?!?!?! (sorry, didn't mean to yell).

Oil still in intake

No, I haven't tried that yet. The engine does have several thousand miles on it. I started out with regular oil and went easy on it for about the first 1000 miles. Then I changed it with Mobil 1. I'm not getting any oil smoke, either. I'll see if I can get the compression checked. Thanks.David

Well, that is basically working as a primitive Evac system.
It pulls excess vacum up from the crank - case.....which is good.
The problem is that there is going to be a side-effect.....which is oil in the intake.
In other words, its "normal" ( IMO ) with it hooked up.

Hmmmmm. Sounds like we need to come up with a better breather, that would do a better job of separating out the oil before it gets into the tube. Also, any ideas for getting around the umetered air problem associated with the remote breather kit? How about another PCV valve in that line?David

svohoo,
My throttle body, VAM and other intake innards are dry, matter of fact just checked them the other day.
My valve cover breather has a hose attached on it that runs underneath the car to ventilate to the atmosphere. I've heard people say that you'll have idle problems like this.
I have no blow-by items routed back to the intake.
I'll tell you what I've done to complicate my idle problem. I also have no EGR, it's capped, and I'm using a BOV.
My idle is not purr-fect, but it's impressively smooth. Engine sits there w/ no shake, no surges, about every 5 seconds it bumps a bit, you can set a watch to it.
I'm not suggesting this, I just tried it myself because when I bought the car it was like you described w/ oil all in the intake tract and I cleaned it all out, considered my oil sources and made a few changes.-James Price- '84 SVO 9W leather, SVO #124

Build a remote located breather system. Get a drysump oil system catchcan and pack it with steel wool. Run a line from the stock breather location to the inlet on the remote seperator, next replace the open element filter on the seperator tank with a line plumed back into the intake elbow of the turbo, and lastly, put a drain valve in the bottom of the seperator tank or plum the drain into the oil pan.Originally posted by svohoo

I am in the middle of installing this type of a thing on my car right now.

Thanks for the help, guys. Lon, can you give a little more info on parts? I ran into Lee Clary (his seat covers are sweet) and he suggested the same thing, but I didn't have a chance to get all the details. Also, do you need to do anything special to keep any stray pieces of steel wool from getting sucked into the compressor? Thanks.David

oil in intake hose
just run a K&N breather in the valve cover, and a motorcraft pcv valve,my car was doing the same thing and under high boost it would push oil up the dipstick tube, i put a new pcv and a K&N breather and now it dosen't use or leak any oil, sucking hot blowby into the intake seems like a bad idea to me,thats my thoughts anyway.Last edited by turbo87notch; 12-02-2002, 06:40 PM.87 mustang coupe, turbocoupe motor, trans, rear. 13.97 94.41
