  • "close enough" interior paint...

    hi all-
ok, I was out at Pep Boys, and found a "close enough" interior spray paint. I dont know if this has been discovered (or posted a billion times), but I searched for the paint code and nothing came up.

its Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric paint, paint code "HPV111". Total cost? $4.99.
I painted a badly sun-damaged dash, and it looks pretty good. I also painted a vandalized arm rest (see pics), and compaired it to a non-painted one. BTW- the origonal one is on the right.

Dont forget surface prep is very important w/ paint- I scrubbed the dash for about 10 mins w/ a green scrubby and simple green, rinsed it off, then wiped the surface down w/ mineral spirits.

only one problem so far, the paint appears to be a "flat" type paint (no gloss). we'll see when it dries, and I'l ltest w/ some armor-all stuff.

It'll do for hte 9L car- I'll be surprised if anyone will be able to tell the difference once I get the center console painted to match (pulled a center console from the JY and it needs a little paint)

edit- added notes about surface prep.

That looks VERY close! I'll have to pick up a can and try it out.

    Thanks, Phil!

Most interiors have a matte finish to them when new, they get a gloss from age and liberal applications of interior polish.

I tried to figure out which was the painted one before reading the rest of your post. Nice job. Can you rub it off with your hand after it drys? How tuff is it to wear?
That looks like a new one!
Time to clean up the engine bay!

Ok, well i get two pics when i click on the links. 1, a paint can lovingly held in someone hand. Actually a really good pic for product recognition. 2. a pic of the part number on the can with two very fuzzy black/grey looking things in the background. I'm assuming they are the parts you painted? Any close up for a better comparison? Maybe my computer is playing up as i am not getting the small thumbnails like i was the other day??

If you click on the thumbnails, they should expand to full size in a new window. I see three thumbnails on my screen. The console armrests are not fuzzy pics at all when I look at them.

unfortunately i can only see two little lines which when clicked upon become large pics in seperate windows. I'm not seeing the third one so can someone PM it to me so we can get back on topic. I'm really interested to see of this stuff is good.

                        SVPU has a close match.

Paul sells paint that is almost a perfect match. I've tried it and it is very close.

                          prep??

What is the best way/ products for prepping the plastic?? I would have thought soapy water and then a final clean with prepsol??

That's what I did to prep my dash pad and console. I used ordinary dishwashing detergent (they're usually pretty neutral and are good at degreasing) followed by some MarHyde Prep-Sol. Slight scuffs can be carefully sanded down with some fine grit sandpaper without affecting the grain of the plastic too much.

                              Hey All,
I grabbed a can of the HVP111 from a local store today and tried it out. It's really good stuff. Do you think 6 can would be enough to paint all the interior pieces???
