  • Lifter Question!!!!!!!

I don’t think I have to but, I’ll ask anyway. Do you have to pre-charge the hyd lifter with oil prior installing?

Well, as some of you know I’ve been having problems at high RPM. Basically around 5200~6000 if I stay there for sometime I would get a backfire into the intake not exhaust. Obviously, Exhaust valve is closed. Then after this I would let up and the engine would be fine. Dummy me I should of known one of hyd lifters stopped working. Yes, you guessed it the cap blew off the lifter, thus no pressure causing the follower/ rocker to float.

Well, at least I believe this is what is happening. We’ll see after I get it all back together.

Oh- remember my over boost problem? Well Saturday I took off the turbo. The T3 that I have has a .750 bi-pass hole. I bored it out to 1.000. Reinstalled it and bingo. Now what was once 28psi +/- at WOT is now 16.4 psi. That’s with no boost control devise. I feel the way my engine runs I have about 2 psi boost creep or so. I think maybe the extra 4psi difference to get to the 10psi external waste gate pressure is accountable to the 2.5l engine I have. This engine flows! Not surprising I had a lean dyno run.

Yea, this is all happening six days before Mid-Ohio. Three days now!

What do you think? What are your thoughts? Am I smoking crack?

    Thanks

These new ones are dry. I can easily compress them 3/8” or so. I guess you’re saying the head oil hole will fill them up with no problems. Thanks for the response. I was hoping you’d respond.

All I did was let them soak overnight in oil before I put mine in, then let it idle for a while, worked fine..

Desired range is 0.040-0.050". Shorten lifter body or shim to get the correct clearance.
        Since this came up --
-- are these clearances the same for roller, and sliders ?

also -- what is a good material to use for shims ?

really -- just a standard steel washer, like you'd pick up at a hardware store ?

what I need are from .020 up to .042 (if you consider everything ends up gapped at .045)

I'm not used to doing this shim thing. I always started with valves that were long enough, and then just trim down the valves to fit -- but this head was already done when I bought it, so I gotta make it fit this way.

yup -- I understand all of the above, but I also get the longer HLA's as well

anyway -- I'm about to go to town, and buy about 5 feeler gauges, and cut them out in the shape I need -- I'm having a heck of a time finding any locally --
My one performance shop that I expected to have stuff like that said naaa-- I've gone to all solid lifters.. so I don't keep them anymore.

Wonder if esslinger will sell them seperate.
4 .025, and 4 .035 would take care of my problems

ok -- just found a specalty place on the internet --

how does .75 diameter, with a .1875 hole in the center sound.
a few in .025, and a few in .035 whill handle what I need for thickness.

How is this working out for you, Eric? Maybe this is what I need to do also? Where did you get the shims?

I wound up getting the shims from a buddy of mine that runs a machine shop. we looked around his place and found several piecses of metal that were the correct thickness, and he trimmed them out with the lazer for me.

there was some 16 gauge, and some other stuff in there. I used 3 different thicknesses to get everything where I wanted.

They all shimmed up to the correct place, I havn't had the engine running yet. if I can get the exhaust finished, it will probably be running next week.

So if the inside of the bore is chamfered. What Diameter did you use? I guess I measure the bottom of the lifter.

no, I don't think you want it in there so tight that it can't move.
The oil drain hole is down there.

I used .80 for mine. even if it moves, this still completly covers the bottom of the lifter.
